Angiogenesis, or formation of new blood vessels from other pre-existing vessels, is essential for
the
tumour growth, progression and
the
subsequent appearance of metastases
in
other organs. For all these reasons,
in
recent years,
the
anti-angiogenic therapies have been a point of intense research
in
developing new cancer treatments. More than 50 pharmacological inhibitors of angiogenesis are currently at different points of its clinical development. Most of
the
targets for these compounds are different factors that induce angiogenesis. One of
the
most important is
the
specific vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which stimulates
the
proliferation and migration of endothelial cells and
the
formation of new blood vessels.
In
fact
,
the
first
selective inhibitor of angiogenesis that has been approved for use
in
patients is bevacizumab (Avastin), a neutralizing antibody against VEGF. Other angiogenic factors such as TGF-beta or angiopoietins not induce proliferation of
the
endothelium but its stabilization.

La angiogénesis o formación de nuevos vasos sanguíneos a partir de otros vasos preexistentes es esencial para el crecimiento tumoral, su progresión y posterior aparición de metástasis en otros órganos. Por todas estas razones, en los últimos años las terapias antiangiogèniques se han desarrollado con fuerza como tratamientos contra el cáncer. En este sentido, más de 50 inhibidores farmacológicos de la angiogénesis se encuentran en estos momentos en diferentes fases de su desarrollo clínico. La mayor parte de las dianas por estos compuestos son diferentes factores que inducen la angiogénesis. Uno de los más importantes y específicos es el factor de crecimiento endotelial vascular o VEGF, que estimula la proliferación y migración de las células endoteliales y la formación de nuevos vasos sanguíneos. De hecho, el primer inhibidor selectivo de la angiogénesis que ha sido aprobado para su uso en pacientes es el bevacizumab (Avastin), un anticuerpo neutralizante contra el VEGF. Otros factores angiogénicos, como el TGF-beta o las angiopoyetinas, no inducen proliferación del endotelio sino su estabilización.

Telstar was not,

the
first
satellite to be used for communications. That honour goes to Echo 1, an experimental project by NASA developed
in
the
late 1950s
in
conjunction with Bell Laboratories. Unlike Telstar, which amplified
the
signals it received before relaying them, Echo was a passive satellite; that is, signals were sent to it from Earth and simply bounced back off its surface to another point on
the
planet. It consisted of a large balloon of about 30.5 metres
in
diameter, made from 0.127-millimetre thick polyester film that had a shiny metal coating. It was launched on 12 August 1960 from Cape Canaveral, and redirected radio, television and telephone signals for eight years.

Our boy has been going through major changes since
the
stem cell treatment at

end of November. Within three weeks he added and retained seven words to his vocabulary, which is quite a feat considering he has only spoken and retained seven words
in
as many years. Because of his verbal dyspraxia, he has spoken more words over
the
years but would lose them immediately. We have also realized that he no longer pronounces
the
end sound of a word

, which was a constant prior to
the
therapy. He is blending multiple sounds moving towards proper pronunciation, something he greatly struggled with.

the

multiple sound word he added was
in
the
taxi ride home from
the
airport after returning from Kiev. He saw
the
petrol station with a car wash and suddenly pointed and said “wash”.

American physician Dr. Isaac Adler was,

scientist to propose a link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer
in
1912, based on his observation that lung cancer patients often reported that they were smokers. Adler's observations, however, were anecdotal, and provided no scientific evidence toward demonstrating a relationship.
The
German epidemiologist Franz Müller is credited with
the
first
case-control study of smoking and lung cancer
in
the
1930s. Müller sent a survey to
the
relatives of individuals who had died of cancer, and asked them about
the
smoking habits of
the
deceased. Based on
the
responses he received, Müller reported a higher incidence of lung cancer among heavy smokers compared to light smokers. However,
the
study had a number of problems.
First
, it relied on
the
memory of relatives of deceased individuals rather than
first
-hand observations, and second, no statistical association was made. Soon after this,
the
tobacco industry began to sponsor research with
the

The
American physician Dr. Isaac Adler was,
in
fact
,
the
first
scientist to propose a link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer
in
1912, based on his observation that lung cancer patients often reported that they were smokers. Adler's observations, however, were anecdotal, and provided no scientific evidence toward demonstrating a relationship.
The
German epidemiologist Franz Müller is credited with
the
first
case-control study of smoking and lung cancer
in
the
1930s. Müller sent a survey to
the
relatives of individuals who had died of cancer, and asked them about
the
smoking habits of
the
deceased. Based on
the
responses he received, Müller reported a higher incidence of lung cancer among heavy smokers compared to light smokers. However,
the
study had a number of problems.
First
, it relied on
the
memory of relatives of deceased individuals rather than
first
-hand observations, and second, no statistical association was made. Soon after this,
the
tobacco industry began to sponsor research with
the
biased goal of repudiating negative health claims against cigarettes (see our Scientific Institutions and Societies module for more information on sponsored research).
