Cuando Joshua iba al preescolar, algún día la maestra le preguntó cómo decía su nombre en coreano. Joshua parecía casi avergonzado, bajó la cabeza y dijo varias veces: “No sé. No tengo nombre coreano”. La maestra luego le preguntó: —¿Qué tal tu mami? ¿Cómo se llama? ¿Cómo se pronuncia su nombre? —No sé —dijo Joshua. Su respuesta me dejó atónita y más tarde en casa, le pregunté por qué había contestado así. Me dijo: —Mis amigos nos escuchaban. Se burlarán de mí si hablo coreano. Suena raro. Nadie habla coreano en la escuela. Sólo es para mami y papi. A mi hijo definitivamente le parecía apenar hablar coreano en la escuela. Cuando hablé de esto más tarde con mis amigos de otros países, hallé que muchos habían tenido experiencias similares. Una amiga de China pidió a las maestras de su hijo que le llamaran por su nombre chino en la escuela. Cierto día dijo el niño a mi amiga: “Mami, tengo mi nombre inglés. Quiero que la gente me llame por ese nombre, no mi nombre chino. Me siento mal”. Los niños DLL pueden percibir las diferencias entre idiomas desde muy temprana edad, y puede ser que consideren el idioma mayoritario como superior. Estos niños deberán de tener mucha oportunidad de usar la lengua materna en la escuela, y se debe enseñar explícitamente a todos los niños a respetar todo idioma.
