“It is, I suppose, a tribute to the curious effect that a story has, when based on very elaborate and detailed workings, of geography, chronology, and language, that so many should clamour for sheer ‘information’, or ‘lore’...” ~ J.R.R.T.

Wasp-waisted with a mermaid's charm and queenly poise, I add a much-needed touch of class to one of life's less glamorous activities. Your feet are crying out for me! So put your best foot forward - it’s good for the sole!

Some commentators described the offer as an ‘extremely open-handed gesture’ from the EC, and South Africa’s chief trade negotiator, Xavier Carim, described the proposal as ‘quite an important development’, adding that it was a good development since ‘we have been arguing for this since May’. The EC argues that the new proposal ‘would allow SA to align its tariff regime with that agreed with the BLNS’ and would ‘solve the problem of regional coherence, and give SA the improved market access it seeks’. It would furthermore ‘leave open the option for SA of folding the bilateral agreement into the EPA if they wished’.

The suspension of meaning and context, of the destination and even the finality of all this energy which expresses itself and develops before our very eyes reminds us of metaphysical questioning of such a strangeness which finally is quite apparent.

Interestingly enough, this growth in supply by Canada is happening at a time when the global economy worldwide is screaming out for additional oil resources, and Canada is in the unique position of being able to meet that demand. We will add another two and a half million barrels of supply to the world supply over the next 10 to 15 years.

Columbus Day Legacy explores the quintessential American issues of free speech and ethnic pride against the backdrop of the ongoing Columbus Day parade controversy in Denver, Colorado. Navajo filmmaker Bennie Klain takes viewers into this very personal yet very public conflict, asking tough questions about identity and history in America. Since 1992, the Denver Italian-American community has proudly and publicly celebrated Columbus Day with a revived parade—long a part of the city’s history—much to the dismay of the local American Indian Movement chapter who are equally determined to vilify the man credited with “discovering” America. The history of this annual parade is peppered with both verbal and physical violence, challenging ideas of political correctness and freedom of assembly. Both the Italian- and Native Americans are strong, vibrant, tight-knit communities—a point conveyed by the film as it uncovers conflicting notions of the freedom of speech, the interpretation of history and what it means to be an “American.”

Whatever the future of Islamism in the Middle East and North Africa in the coming decade, it will face serious competition from other forces. Across the region, the public is clamouring for more democratic systems. The surge of demand for more democratic structures and participation has prompted several governments and leaders to begin a tentative process of democratization. But the process is precarious and fragile. It can be turned on and off at will. Some governments appear to take forward steps at one time, only to retreat subsequently and raise the question in the public mind whether they are at all serious. Their security and intelligence apparatuses are omnipresent and effectively stifle dissent.

The area encompassed today in Kootenay National Park has been a travel route for thousands of years. Aboriginal peoples travelled the valley bottoms; later, explorers and settlers came. In 1858, Sir James Hector travelled through Vermilion Pass and noted that, in all his explorations, the pass was the best route for a wagon road. But it was not until the early 1900s that settlers, led by the Invermere businessman Sir Randolf Bruce, began clamouring for a more direct route to markets in Banff and Calgary. This led to a meeting with the premier of British Columbia and a proposal to build a road via the Vermilion and Kootenay River valleys, crossing Vermilion Pass as Hector had recommended in 1858.

Inequality is the evil of our time. The people in our ghettoes and villages, the youth educated or unskilled who are today left with no jobs or the hope of decent work in their lifetimes cry out for decisive leadership.

The Bologna Process reforms have been implemented through varying national modes of structural adjustment preparation, for example, the widespread notion of “autonomy” – a neoliberal trojan horse as a vocabulary term – introduced in the 1990s in Austria in a proactive way, although markedly reactive in nature. More and more, “autonomy” is offered and implemented to cool the flames of discontent when demands for less top-down restructuring are made. What sounds like an answer to demands can in fact be typified in the story this analysis opened with, of the Academy negotiations for the Budgetary Agreement. “Autonomy” denotes an increasing absence of Ministerial financial responsibility for educational institutions, i.e. the state leaving universities to the “freedom” of the shark pool of the open market for funding. Therefore, private investment that dramatically restructures departments and curricula to fit its needs, tuition hikes, greater differentiation for non-residential students and staff, mobility projects to increase the profitable turnover of non-residents, etc. have been typical results of this “autonomy”. As the protests and their vocabulary have been appropriated by politicians and deans, demands twisted into perverse reflections of their intentions, the process of taking reforms into one’s own hands have become somewhat incarcerating, neutralizing subversion.
