établissement des colons

Neveu developed his vast domain wisely and encouraged settlement. He had a tar kiln, sawmill, and flour mill built on his lands. He also had built, at his own expense, the first chapel and the presbytery of Lanoraie. In 1744 he gave the site for the building of the first stone church, then in 1752 he made over to the council of the parish, free of charge, a piece of land of 120 acres.

The land that Johnson chose on the north and south sides of the Raisin river contained an ideal spot for saw and grist mills. These were two essential components of early settlements in Loyalist Upper Canada. The house built adjacent to the mills, now known as Sir John Johnson House, was most likely constructed for the miller, not for Johnson himself. It was a small five bay, 1½ storey log house constructed in the French piéce-sur-piéce manner. This construction method uses squared, horizontal logs laid one on top of the other and mortised into the vertical posts.

européens et, malgré les déclins, le Bruant familier est encore l'un des oiseaux chanteurs migrateurs les plus communs et les plus répandus.

Although the population of the Chipping Sparrow is declining over the long term, trend is significantly positive in several regions of Canada for 1994-1998, and strongly increasing in migration counts in southern Ontario since the early 1980s (Francis and Hussell 1998). Range expanded with European settlement, and despite declines, this species is still one of the most common and widespread of migrant songbirds, and probably is still more abundant than it was in pre-European times (Middleton 1998). Probably affected negatively by reforestation of eastern North America, but has adapted well to suburban habitats.
