The fish trap is set twice annually, once early in the summer, for the main migration, and again late in the summer, to catch the return drift of spawned-out fish. The early fish are ‘put up’ — split and sun- or smoke-dried. The late fish are generally ‘pitted’; i.e., thrown into pits, five or six feet [1.5 to 1.8 m] deep, dug into the permafrost and floored and later covered with spruce boughs. The pit fish are left to rot partially. Pits are covered with heavy logs to preserve contents from dogs and other animals. Pit fish are dog feed. Probably pit fish were little used in pre-contact times because there were few dogs. However, the use of fish traps and of pit fish did overlap by perhaps half a century in the Peel River area.”

20. The representatives of the Palestinian chambers of commerce, as well as other persons interviewed, drew attention to the extent to which the various closures had disrupted the import of raw materials and equipment as well as the export of finished products; transport had become impossible or prohibitively expensive. Palestinian business people received authorization to travel in Israel only for a very limited time, if at all; moreover, this still did not guarantee that they would actually be allowed through the different checkpoints. The current situation had brought investment to an almost complete halt. In addition, there had been many cases of destruction of enterprise premises and farms as well as irrigation systems and crops, either by soldiers or by settlers. Moreover, Arab employers, in Jerusalem in particular, considered that they were the target of discrimination by comparison to the settlers, who benefited from many additional facilities for the transport and sale of their goods.

Much as was the case with 7 Platoon, the soldiers divided their time between sentry duty in the LAVs or in the machine gun posts, and in catching up on sleep or a meal. Manpower was particularly limited, since the section involved in the IED strike that morning was getting checked out medically back at Patrol Base Wilson for any injuries possibly sustained during the blast. A minimal diversion was also present, as the platoon played host to a number of visitors. A local district chief, his ANP bodyguard, and civil-military affairs (CIMIC) personnel were conducting an on-site meeting to discuss the progress of the road. In addition, a combat cameraman and a senior officer on a technical assistance visit were also present. However, the incidents of the morning seemed to harbour no sinister omen and they were already largely forgotten. After all, those types of events were virtually everyday occurrences in this theatre of operations.

Many of the numerous stories associated with the Rolex Daytona remind us how sought-after this iconic vintage watch is. The first watch auctions were relatively low-key affairs, with most of the interest focused on pocket watches. Rolex wristwatches were put up for sale in batches, at ridiculously low prices. It wasn’t long, however, before Rolex and Patek Philippe wristwatches were catching bidders’ eye for the sheer variety of styles proposed. Foremost among those who can claim to have been instrumental in making wristwatch auctions what they are today is Osvaldo Patrizzi, the founder of Antiquorum who put wristwatch auctions in the spotlight in the early 1980s, closely followed by Daryn Schnipper at Sotheby’s. They were already criss-crossing the globe in search of horological treasures of every ilk, but most of all the Daytona.

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience living and working in the Samoan community. The Samoan people reminded me daily why they are legendary for their hospitality. I always felt welcome and safe, and this made my working environment a pleasure to enter into every day. However, this is not to say there were no challenges for me during my service. The biggest obstacle I faced was keeping the participating young farmers motivated to continue their hard work. Although most youth liked the idea of running their own enterprise, few had the experience to understand what it takes to keep a business enterprise afloat. This required frequent meetings, training and site visits to the various projects to educate, motivate and encourage the youth to keep moving forward.

Honourable senators, I mentioned earlier the obesity rates for adults. Now I want to tell you how bad it is for our youth and children. Think back to when we were in school; there were few kids who were fat. In fact, they stood out they were so rare. Over the years things have really changed and 35 years ago, 15 per cent of children and youth aged 2 to 17 were either overweight or obese. By 2004 that rate had risen to 26 per cent including 8 per cent classed as obese. Canada has one of the highest rates of childhood obesity in the developed world, ranking fifth out of the 34 OECD countries.

From 1990 to 2008, medium- and high-efficiency gas systems increased their share of the gas market from 10 percent to 83 percent. My fellow commissioners and I sought information from a variety of sources. One of our activities was to cross the country to listen to what Canadian children and young people had to tell us. After all, it was their year! We were both surprised and dismayed to discover how few of them felt truly valued and respected by Canadian society. And how rarely they were consulted about important issues. This was less a reflection on their parents than a comment on the social environment in which they were living. Yet for the most part these were articulate and thoughtful young people. On a positive note we were struck by the fact that those who appeared to be most successful at managing the transition from uneasy adolescence to responsible adulthood all told us that they had been given opportunities very young to have some say in what went on in their lives.

We studied the mating system of white spruce (Picea glauca) in a landscape fragmented by agriculture in northern Ontario, Canada. We sampled 23 stands that ranged in size from 1 to >500 trees isolated by 250-3000 m from the nearest other stand. Six polymorphic allozyme loci from four enzyme systems were used to genotype approximately 10000 embryos from 104 families. We detected no allele frequency heterogeneity in the pollen pool among stands or families (FT= -.025). Overall, estimates of outcrossing were high (tm = 94% and mean te = 91%) but significantly different from unity. Bi-parental inbreeding (tm-ts = 3.2%) was low but significantly different from zero. Allozyme-based outcrossing estimates did not differ significantly among three stand-size classes (SSCs): small (<10 trees), medium (10-100 trees) and large (>100 trees). The number of effective pollen donors was high in all SSCs, but was significantly lower in small stands (Nep = 62.5) than in medium-sized and large stands (both Nep= 143). The primary selfing rate was significantly higher in medium stands than in large stands. We found no significant difference in genetic diversity measures in the filial (seed) population among SSCs. Overall, these results indicate that white spruce stands in this fragmented landscape are resistant to genetic diversity losses, primarily through high pollen-mediated gene-flow and early selection against inbred embryos. We discuss the importance of using seed data, in conjunction with genetic data, to evaluate the impacts of fragmentation on natural populations.
