On my body map, the virus is centered in my stomach. This was the first symptom leading to my diagnosis. In the fall of 1996, I began having severe stomach pains that sent me to the clinic. I informed the doctor that I was a sickle-cell carrier and her response to me was “Since you are from Africa, let’s do an HIV test.” I quickly agreed. At my follow-up meeting, the doctor said to me: “I have bad news for you. You are HIV positive. Is there anything you want to talk about?” At this point I froze and just stared blankly into space. I was in shock, mentally visualizing what an HIV positive person looked like in African context. In my mind that person looked like a stick. I told the doctor there must have been a mistake and asked for a second test. After hearing my results I then accepted my HIV positive diagnosis.
