The Government of India is active in promoting insurance to farmers, in particular through its Prime Minister’s Crop Insurance Scheme, but the coverage is largely bundled with loans from rural banks. The ILO’s Impact Insurance Facility is working with the Ford Foundation and its partners in four states of India to test other distribution channels in order to protect farmers who are not taking loans. The project aims to build the capacity of alternative distribution channels, including non-governmental organizations and community groups, to engage with farmers, designated insurers and government institutions, to improve farmers’ understanding of insurance and set up processes that can help them to enrol and receive claims.

L’association a organisé des forums pour des organisations de la société civile de deux États indiens au cours desquels on les a invitées à présenter des études de cas et des données liées à la violence contre les femmes, en particulier le mariage forcé et le mariage d’enfants.
In India, the Association for Advocacy and Legal Initiatives conducted a baseline study specifically focused on the Rights of Women in Relation to Marriage. The group organized forums for an array of civil society groups from two Indian states and asked them to bring case studies and data related to violence against women, specifically forced and child marriage. As a part of this process, major gaps in state data collection on violence against women as well as civil society minimization of certain types of violence, such as domestic violence, were revealed. The final baseline report examined data, the legal rights of women, and the state response through three phases – entry into marriage, during marriage, and dissolution of marriage. The report describes the basic laws that apply in cases of violence against women, as well as criminal justice system responses to the problem, and used case studies to highlight key findings.

In 1993, with support from the World Bank, the government of Uttar Pradesh, India, launched the Sodic Lands Reclamation Project. This farmer-driven project aimed to strengthen local institutions, empower the beneficiaries and develop a model for transferring service delivery to communities. It showed how the integration of traditional knowledge into project operations can help transform barren soils into fertile arable land. The farmers created local implementation committees and self help groups. Applying their own knowledge and experience, farmers reclaimed over 68 000 ha belonging to 247 000 families. They spread gypsum, leached the soil, started multiple cropping, green manuring and crop rotation, used compost and ploughed the land. Maintaining continuous ground cover through intensive cropping protected the soil. In some cases, farmers drew from farming practices in other Indian states. Examples of the different remedies and approaches used are given. Benefits from knowledge sharing included: cropping intensity increased from 37% to 200%; wheat and rice yields on reclaimed land were double the projection; farmers' annual savings rose to 555 US$; and, seasonal labour migration from the project villages dropped. Long term sustainability was achieved by setting up a permanent FarmersFieldSchool in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh.
