This UNCTA-UNEP/CBTF study recommends that developing country governments should play a facilitating role and engage with stakeholders when developing their organic policies. It presents an evaluation of several country case studies (South Africa). It notes that compliance with international standards is necessary if countries are to realise the benefits from organic agriculture and that they should build the requisite capacities through education, research, extension and other aspects. Recommendations are made for general policy, standards and regulations, markets, production and other including, training, education and research. The need for specialised research and development programmes and prioritisation of organic research avenues is acknowledged.

The Synod of Bishops was established by Pope Paul Vl by Motu proprio "Apostolica sollicitudo" of 15 September 1965. Pope Paul Vl gave the definition of the Synod of Bishops at the Sunday Angelus of 22 September 1974: "It is an ecclesiastic institution, which, on interrogating the signs of the times and as well as trying to provide a deeper interpretation of divine designs and the constitution of the Catholic Church, we set up after Vatican Council II in order to foster the unity and cooperation of bishops around the world with the Holy See. It does this by means of a common study concerning the conditions of the Church and a joint solution on matters concerning Her mission. It is neither a Council nor a Parliament but a special type of Synod".

Risto Penttilä, director of the Finnish Business und Politics Forum EVA, considers different leadership styles: "According to a joint Finnish-Swedish study, Swedish business culture places more emphasis on correct process: giving everyone the chance to be heard. This is considered more important in Sweden than the actual content or timing of a decision. But in Finland they concentrate on making the right decision at the right time. Placing so much emphasis on action can harm communication, but Finland's performance-driven leadership style can be explained in part by the country's history. ... Being right next to the Soviet giant, the Finns learned that survival is more important than style. … Swedish business leaders sometimes represent the viewpoint that the best management style would be a combination of Finnish determination and Swedish – or German – readiness to let everyone participate in decision-making."

The bilateral Economic Partnership and Free Trade Agreement with Japan, one of Switzerland's four most important trading partners, come into force on 1 September. The Free Trade Agreement between EFTA and Canada also came into force during the year under review. China and Switzerland agreed to conduct a feasibility study for a bilateral Free Trade Agreement. Switzerland ratified an agreement between EFTA and Colombia, and EFTA also signed agreements with Serbia, Albania and members of the Arab Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). An agreement with Peru is expected to be signed in the near future. This will bring the total number of free trade agreements between Switzerland and partners outside the EU and EFTA to 23. EFTA negotiations are under way with Algeria, India and the Ukraine, and further negotiations will commence this year with Hong Kong and other countries, possibly including Indonesia and Russia. EFTA is working on a feasibility study with Vietnam.

Many of the pest management challenges we face in Canadian museums are shared by museums in Japan. About 70% of the pest species are similar. The building or site issues, ranging from outdoor locales to modern facilities, are much the same. Subterranean termites, a common problem in Japan, will increase in Canada as our climate warms. And international agreements that limit the use of popular fumigants due to their ozone-depleting effect are creating comparable legislative environments and workplace restrictions. Given these parallels, cooperation between CCI and Tobunken in integrated pest management (IPM) research work and training can maximize the benefits for both Canada and Japan. My collaboration with Dr. Rika Kigawa helped us to demonstrate the low adverse impact and the effectiveness of pest control strategies other than proscribed and candidate replacement fumigants, and to improve our teaching of the IPM “toolkit” for protecting cultural heritage.
