A two-year study of antioxidants in greenhouse tomato was conducted. Plants were treated continuously with nutrient solution electrical conductivities (EC) of 2, 4, or 6 dS m-1. Increasing EC reduced yield per plant and fruit size. Oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC), lutein, β-carotene, lycopene, and vitamin C concentrations were evaluated in harvested fruit. ORAC and all antioxidants with the exception of lutein increased with EC. None of the 10 genes involved in antioxidant metabolism were affected by salinity in ripe fruit, but the expression of three of them (ZDS, CrtR-b1, and NCED1) varied with the stage of fruit development. Antioxidant concentrations were related to greenhouse climatic conditions. β-Carotene, lycopene, lutein, and vitamin C responded negatively to light and positively to temperature, whereas ORAC was unresponsive. Multiple regressions of antioxidants in relation to EC and climatic factors showed that antioxidants responded more strongly to light and temperature than to EC.

In a Swedish program, the Karolinska project for Early treatment of Women with Alcohol Addiction (EWA), women without prior treatment were encouraged to seek assistance for their problem substance use. Participants were contacted through health-related organizations and services in the community. The treatment intervention involved a short inpatient stay followed by frequent outpatient appointments for a minimum of 6 months, maintaining a stable client-therapist relationship over the course of the program. These appointments included medical evaluations, counselling and therapeutic services, and the development of a "total life situation" treatment contract addressing social support, vocational concerns and a range of physical and mental health issues. There is a research program attached to the EWA and a 2 year outcome study, involving 84 of the first 100 women treated, showed that two thirds of the participants experienced positive outcomes, including drinking within recommended guidelines, and improved occupational functioning and social relationships (Haver & Franck, 1997).

MRS scans were conducted once a year over a two-year period. The scans measured the concentrations of various molecules in a myelin-rich region of the brain. The researchers followed and compared concentrations of these molecules over the two-year period, looking for any changes over time. Ninhydrin is used to monitor for the presence of ammonia and other primary and secondary amines. Very limited data were available on ninhydrin. Ninhydrin was reported to be negative in an Ames assay with and without metabolic activation (Zeiger et al., 1987), however, it was reported to act as a potent stage-I tumour promoter in a dermal carcinogenicity study in mice (Shukla et al., 1994). It did not however, produce tumours when applied as a stage-II or complete tumour promoter. The relevance of these types of tumour promotion and initiation assays to the assessment of human carcinogenic risk is questionable. A 2-year carcinogenicity study on phthalic anhydride, a chemical structurally related to ninhydrin, was performed by the NCI (1979; Kluwe et al. 1982). In each of F344 rats and B6C3F1 mice phthalic anhydride failed to induce tumours, even when administered at high doses in the diet. Given this and the lack of structural alerts, ninhydrin was classified as "Not reported to have carcinogenic potential and without theoretical risk".

Ridge-tilled corn (Zea mays L.) could benefit from arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. Under low soil disturbance, AM hyphal networks are preserved and can contribute to corn nutrition. A 2-yr study was conducted in the St. Lawrence Lowlands (Quebec, Canada) to test the effects of indigenous AM fungi on corn P nutrition, growth, and soil P in field cropped for 8 yr under ridge-tillage. Phosphorus treatments (0, 17, 35 kg P ha- 1) were applied to AM-inhibited (AMi) (fungicide treated) and AM non-inhibited (AMni) plots. Plant tissue and soil were sampled 22, 48 and 72 days after seeding (DAS). P dynamics was monitored in situ with anionic exchange membranes (Paem) from seeding to the end of July. AMni plants showed extensive AM colonization at all P rates. At 22 DAS, AMi plants had decreased growth in the absence of P inputs, while AMni plants had higher dry mass (DM) and P uptake in unfertilized plots. The Paem was lower in the AMni unfertilized soils in 1998 and at all P rates in 1999, indicating an inverse relationship between P uptake and Paem. At harvest, grain P content of AMni plants was greater than that of AMi plants. In 1998, only AMi plants had decreased yield in the absence of P fertilization. In 1999, AMni plants produced greater grain yield than AMi plants at all P rates. AM fungi improve the exploitation of soil P by corn thereby maintaining high yields while reducing crop reliance on P inputs in RT.
