Water extraction and diversion for industrial activities are expected to have impacts on the biophysical properties and processes of Canadian Shield lakes. The proposed research will determine these impacts through the use of a novel experimental approach that directly manipulates the amount of upstream flow entering a lake. Our objectives are to quantify the impacts of water diversion on lake ecosystem function and to examine subsequent changes to fish and fish habitat. The study will take place at the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA), a world renowned facility that has served as a natural laboratory for the study of various human impacts on boreal lakes. After two years of baseline study in the experimental lake all upstream flow will be diverted. We predict that upstream diversion will lower lake levels and increase water residence time, resulting in changes to water clarity and cascade to affect the habitat available to fish.
