The Canadian wine industry produces 100% Canadian and VQA wines as well as International Canadian Blended, ICB, wines. Both are significant economic drivers to the Canadian economy. We recently completed a landmark national economic impact study, which found that 100% Canadian and VQA wines contributed $3.7 billion, including tourism, to the Canadian economy, and wines blended in Canada from imported and domestic content contributed an additional $3.1 billion. This is an impressive figure—$6.8 billion combined—and is the result of 500 grape wineries and 1,300 independent grape growers across the country.

What sets the Ontario Health Study apart from other studies is its potential to reach a large and diverse population residing in Ontario. With it being possible to follow the health of so many diverse people, the Study may detect new risk factors or combinations of risk factors and may be able to investigate many less common diseases. The ethnic and geographic diversity in Ontario also makes the province ideal for an investigation into a variety of risk factors for common diseases across different ethnic groups and environments. The OHS is one of the first studies to collect data relevant to many diseases from a large-enough number of people to draw meaningful conclusions. The Ontario Health Study is part of the Canadian Partnership for Tomorrow Project, a landmark study whose goal is to recruit and follow the health of 300,000 Canadians in five regions across the country.

Team 17: Interventions at the Sensory and Cognitive Interface. Co-led by Drs. Natalie Phillips and Walter Wittich, the team’s research focuses on the simultaneous presence of two (or more) sensory conditions that older adults with dementia frequently have. In particular, the team studies the interaction between sensory loss and cognitive function – i.e. the challenges this presents for cognitive assessment and early detection, as well as the implications for quality of life (including communication and interaction with others). Their research approaches include analyzing large databases (e.g., the CCNA’s signature study COMPASS-ND, the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging, and the Canadian Institute for Health Information), as well as experimental studies, experimental interventions, and qualitative interviews.

With over 2.3 million people living with the disabling effects of multiple sclerosis (MS) world-wide, it is no surprise that many research teams around the world have been working to find a cure for the disease. While disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) help in temporarily immobilizing the harmful immune system in MS, for some individuals these treatments are insufficient as attacks continue and disability worsens. One therapeutic procedure that has garnered attention in the MS world is called immunoablation and autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (IAHSCT), which in the context of MS works by “resetting” the diseased immune system and replacing it with a healthy one. A number of studies show that the treatment has the potential to stop the progression of MS in its tracks, prevent the requirement of DMTs, and in some cases improve function. A landmark study funded by the MS Society of Canada and the Multiple Sclerosis Scientific Research Foundation (MSSRF), known as the Canadian Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) trial, was recently published in the highly renowned medical journal
