A risk-assessment has been linked to most of the scientific studies being carried out. This means that not just the presence of trace elements and their bioavailability is being studied, but that risks to the consumer at higher levels are also being assessed.

In a separate study examining the fast-growing market for digital OOH media in Western Europe, Berlin-based research company Goldmedia Gmbh and its London-based research partner Screen Digest predict DOOH ad revenues will quadruple over the next five years from approximately $204 million in 2007 to $797 million by 2012. According to “Digital Signage in Europe: Opportunities for Digital Out-of-home Advertising”, the OOH sector will be the only traditional advertising media to post real revenue growth during the next five years. By 2012, DOOH share is expected to grow to approximately 10 percent of total OOH.

A 3-DOF experiment that has been design and developed in-house is used in the aircraft stability and control course (AEE465). The experiment is mounted in the medium wind-tunnel and has the capability to isolate each DOF, allowing the separate or combined study of longitudinal, lateral, and directional trim, control, static, and dynamic characteristics for different aircraft configurations.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the browning potential of several new apple varieties, compared to standard apple cultivars used for slicing. Apples were harvested either in Ontario and/or British Columbia and stored at 0-1°C for one or three months. Apples were sliced and held in bags at 5°C for one week and then assessed for browning. In a separate study, post-cutting treatments utilizing 1-methylcycopropene technology were also evaluated. Overall, the results of this study indicate that: 1) differences exist in the browning potential of slices, among the various apple varieties, 2) ‘Eden’ appears to be consistently more resistant to browning, 3) growing location may be a factor in the degree of browning, but not consistently so, and 4) ‘Ambrosia’ responds similarly to post-cutting treatments whether they are grown in Ontario or British Columbia.

This project seeks to evaluate the impact of passage through the Free Urban Zones (ZFU) on the employment rate of individuals of foreign origin. The research considers different populations of foreign origin, defined by criteria of nationality at birth and country of birth of individuals (and, when data permits, of their parents). A separate study of the impact of the ZFU on the employment of these populations is important for two reasons: on the one hand, populations of foreign origin are largely over-represented in the resident populations of the ZFU, and certain groups issuing from these populations are particularly affected by unemployment. On the other hand, their “employability” is different from that of the rest of the population, given the possibility that the jobs created in the ZFU are not always adapted to them, on account of qualifications (theme of skill mismatch), or due to “ethnic” hiring discrimination to which these populations are at times victim. Assuming that we observe differences with respect to the effect of the ZFU on the employment of these populations, the study then seeks to explain these differences given the type of jobs created within the ZFU. For this purpose it concentrates on two indicators: the rate of low-skilled jobs and the rate of jobs implying contact with clientele.

The new Centre for Research on Brain, Language and Music – CRBLM integrates within one strategic research group, a significant focus on each research domain (language and music) and their intersection. This is a logical yet forward-looking synergy and it represents a unique opportunity to organize and develop within Quebec and Canada a significant research focus on the neurosciences of language and music that is unparalleled anywhere in the world. The mission of the CRBLM is to establish, through the consolidation and interaction of these two complementary groups of researchers and extensive research facilities, an international hub for basic and applied research and research training in the neuroscience of language and music. The mandate includes educational activities, community outreach, knowledge dissemination, international conferences and media activities. Our overall objective is to gather unique insights into the organization of the human brain for speech, language, music and communication by studying, separately and in combination, the biological endowment of language and music and the associated cognitive processes. This exciting new directions has important implications for application in clinical, rehabilitative, and pedagogic realms.
