US firms in particular increased their R&D expenditures in the EU from USD 12 billion in 2000 to USD 23 billion by 2008. US firms spend ten times more on R&D in the European Union than in China and India combined. A recent survey (IP/12/905) of top EU firms indicated the strong positive effects of public R&D investment on private R&D, including fiscal incentives, national grants, EU financial support and public-private partnerships both at national and EU level.

The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) has analyzed the effect of a 10-meter rise in sea level. The study points out that 634 million people live along coasts at or below 10 m above sea level, in what is called the Low Elevation Coastal Zone. This massive vulnerable group includes one eighth of the world’s urban population. One of the countries most vulnerable is China, with 144 million potential climate refugees. India and Bangladesh are next, with 63 and 62 million respectively. Vietnam has 43 million vulnerable people, and Indonesia, 42 million. Others in the top 10 include Japan with 30 million, Egypt with 26 million, and the United States with 23 million.

Catherine Muui at Kenyatta University and colleagues collected the germplasm of sorghum landraces in four major sorghum growing regions of the eastern province of Kenya. Information was collected on farmer preferred traits, seed sources and variety type and recorded for each of the forty four different landraces obtained. Results show that the landraces carry unique traits associated with environmental adaptation, biotic stress resistance, grain yield and quality, food preparation and post-harvest processing. The authors believe this yet untapped diversity could be useful in crop improvement programmes. They fear however that the decline in use of the landraces may erode the genetic base of sorghum and prevent the use of distinctive traits in the future. The study underscores the importance of farmer-led ex situ conservation of plant genetic resources.

The project LECTURE (Reading) proposed by the association called “Agir pour l’Ecole” aims to assist teachers to change their pedagogical practices, to adapt them as best they can to the progress of their pupils in reading. The impact of this teacher-training programme, designed for the upper year of pre-school, demonstrates significant improvements among the participating pupils, and a reduction in the inequalities, for a much better cost-benefit ratio than other education policies (for example, reduction of class sizes). This study underscores the importance of teachers’ pedagogies on the progress of pupils and indicates that intensive and structured training can effectively modify their practices.

Staphylococcus aureus is an important bacterial pathogen which is a leading cause of biofilm-associated infections on indwelling medical devices. Biofilms are currently estimated to be involved in more than 65 % of hospital-acquired (nosocomial) infections. Biofilm infections are difficult to eradicate because many cells within the biofilm show increased resistance towards antibiotics. This is compounded by the prevalence of strains that are resistant to multiple antibiotics, such as methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) strains. Consequently, understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying the formation of staphylococcal biofilms may contribute to the development of novel therapeutic approaches. In collaboration with two other teams (Trinity College Dublin & University of Pavia), the researchers used the new tools of nanotechnology to unravel the molecular mechanism by which the cell wall protein SasG mediates strong, zinc-dependent cell-cell adhesion, thereby leading to the formation of stable biofilms. Here we employed two complementary analytical techniques, biomarker measurements by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and solution-state 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, to provide further information at a molecular-level about the composition and possible source of SOM in the Garwood Valley, Antarctica. The predominance of branched alkanes and short-chain lipids in the solvent extracts indicates that the primary contribution to the SOM was microbial-derived. Chemical structures in the NaOH extracts from soils were also dominated by amide, peptides, and a CH3-dominating aliphatic region that were characteristic of microbial signatures. Furthermore, the SOM in the Garwood Valley contained compounds that were different from those in the cyanobacteria-dominated mat from a nearby lake (including monoethyl alkanes and enriched side-chain protons). This observation suggests that easily degradable carbon sources from the nearby lake did not dominate the SOM, which is consistent with a fast turnover of the mat-derived organic matter found in the valley. This study highlights the important role of native soil microbes in the carbon transformation and biogeochemistry in terrestrial Antarctica.
