The Dominion Astrophysical Observatory (DAO) has been designated a national historic site because of its important role in establishing Canada’s international scientific reputation in astronomy. Over the decades, these telescopes have contributed significantly to our understanding of the rotation, size and mass of the Milky Way, and of the rarefied interstellar medium between the stars. Recent projects include orbital determination of comets and asteroids, spectroscopy of magnetic stars, and ongoing studies of distant quasars and galaxies.

Fisheries & Oceans Canada has been conducting annual monitoring of resident killer whales for over 30 years, resulting in one of the longest continuous studies of any cetacean population in the world. The annual census of the resident killer whale population involves the use of photo-identification, a technique that was established in the early 1970’s by the late Michael Bigg. Using photographs to identify individual killer whales enables researchers to estimate population size by directly counting all individuals, and gives insight into social structure, birth and death rates, ages of individuals, and movement patterns.

Until such a model is created, the disturbing tendency to mix and match ideas from different theories remains prevalent, sometimes resulting in a choice of ideas that are in opposition to each other. The result is the creation of doctrine that is fraught with internal inconsistencies, as is often seen in the multi-cultural armed forces of Canada and the United States. Education will certainly help but a long-term solution remains doubtful. Thus, in spite of the many barriers, the study of military theory is not just worthwhile, it is necessary – particularly so to smaller militaries such as that of Canada. If military theory is to be ‘taken back’ by military professionals from sociologists, psychologists, and anthropologists, expanded study by uniformed personnel is critical. Only through continuous study can progress be made toward a universal understanding of the nature of war.
