No trip to San Francisco would be complete without a trip to Alcatraz. Movies, television and history books have made ‘The Rock’ the most famous prison in the world, but only a visit can give you a true sense of what it was like to be imprisoned there. Be warned though; do not expect to be able to buy your tickets when you get to San Francisco. During the Summer months you need to book at least 2 MONTHS in advance. I was surrounded by disappointed people looking for tickets.

While the newfound legality of cannabis for recreational use is cause for celebration, (weed is legal, yay), the end of our generation’s version of prohibition has also left a wake of confusion when it comes to navigating the surrounding culture. A centennial-long threat of incarceration has shrouded the process of utilizing the cannabis plant. Now that the proverbial smoke has lifted, there seems to be an overwhelming feeling shared by new consumers: weed is legal, now what?

The British military hospital, where the two Canadian nurses worked, came under fierce shelling during the Japanese attack. On Christmas Day, when the British surrendered the colony, a period of horror began: 287 Canadians died during the fall of Hong Kong, and 266 more succumbed to hunger, disease and abuse during the next three and a half years, which the survivors of the invasion spent in brutal captivity. Four Canadians were executed for attempting to escape from Japanese prison camps.

If you miss a court date, you could be arrested. Contact a lawyer for advice. You may be able to sign a promise to appear in court at a later date, and the court may cancel any warrant for your arrest. If a warrant says that you must go to jail until you pay a certain amount, then you must pay it or wait until you are released from custody. Here's how to find a lawyer

I hope Mr. Comartin is listening, because he seems to have completely missed this--members of the Bloc miss it; some of the members of the Liberal Party get it and some Liberals miss it, but the point I wanted to make and what we're talking about on this side of the table is compassion for the lives of the families and friends and communities of the victims. In my view, they are lives that are important too. For each murderer who's incarcerated, and might be incarcerated for 25 years or more for each life they took, there are many more victims.

Why do we imprison people? What does this tell us about the meaning of ‘good and evil’ for us? I wanted to come even closer to prisoners’ hearts and gain in credibility so as to inform the rest of the world and inspire people to a greater duty of care. This resulted in visits to some 200 prisons and voluntary imprisonment in half of them. Besides, working three weeks for a medical project in 7 prisons in Papua New Guinea inspired me to work for the sick as well. During more than ten years I combined my passion for prisons with end-of-life care in a few hospitals in the Antwerp area.

Consequently, a part of Waseskun's mission is to provide a culturally relevant environment in which men can heal. This involves many facets but the most important consideration is that all expressions of culture are encouraged and supported. The diversity of cultures was identified as a challenge by some of the staff, and a positive benefit by others. On one hand it is difficult to incorporate different beliefs into a common method of cultural teaching. There are also biases, as the Elder comes from one nation and Helpers come from other nations. The question becomes: where do the residents look to for teaching about their own culture.

You may be legally required to register for military service and to respond to call-up orders in the country of your other nationality. This obligation may be enforced even if you are just visiting that country and permanently reside in Canada. Some countries do not accept ignorance as an excuse for failure to comply. The consequences could be imprisonment or immediate induction into military service the next time you arrive in the country or attempt to leave. Even dual citizens who have passed the age for military service may be considered defaulters for failing to report at the required time.

The steps to successful reintegration do not happen quickly. Like any behaviour modification it involves time and the movement may waver back and forth rather than heading steadily forward. How an individual acts depends on how he views the consequences and that view, whether positive or negative, is based on what is important in his life. Thus, he is constantly analysing the choices that he has to make. The priorities in his life guide his decisions, something that is true for most of us. It is at this point that we look to see how former inmates, who have made many negative choices, can assist in keeping young people from following the same path.

Counsel for the claimant submits that Mr. Hinzman risks incarceration for a lengthy period of time, should he be found guilty of any of these offences. He argues that the cases set out in the materials suggest that the most likely sentence may be several years in custody. He states that each case turns on its own facts and that it is not impossible that a lengthened, or indeed a shortened, sentence might be imposed. He submits that, unless the Board were to conclude that the length of sentence imposed is likely to be minimal, the risk of such incarceration would satisfy the objective fear that Mr. Hinzman is required to establish. I disagree. Mr. Hinzman has adduced insufficient evidence that he would be treated differently or punished more severely because of his religious beliefs or political opinions. In addition, he has not established that the punitive articles of the UCMJ amount to cruel or unusual treatment or punishment. The articles are a lawful sanction, not imposed in disregard of acceptable international standards, because they do not represent a disproportionate punishment for the offence of desertion, and the punishment is not so excessive as to outrage standards of decency and surpass all rational bounds of punishment. The punishment is not grossly disproportionate to the inherent seriousness of the offence of desertion.88
