A 5-year EU-assisted project, INEA will use edible aroids as a model to improve clonally propagated crops of the tropics, which are difficult to adapt to new conditions as they rarely flower and set seed. In order to overcome the constraints such as climate change, pests and diseases, market needs, etc., INEA will help countries bring together plants with varied genetic backgrounds, assist with breeding strategies, and demonstrate the use of modern biotechnologies to facilitate the work. In the process, it will develop a network of scientists and farmers exchanging information and germplasm under the auspices of international treaties.

English is a fine art painter specializing in oils. English received his bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of North Texas in Denton. English also tend to use historical imagery as a template to explore universal issues. Frequently he reworks such images as The Last Supper, Starry Night and Picasso’s “Guernica”. In 2006, English exhibited “Grade School Guernica” one of his versions of Picasso’s “Guernica” at the Station Museum of Contemporary Art in Houston. The painting depicts the scene acted out by his children viewed from the point of view of the bomber airplane and since then he has created more than 100 different artworks.

The seedlings responded to grazing by immediately adjusting their global gene expression, e.g. enhancing anaerobic respiration, starch-to-sugar conversion, sucrose synthesis, and sugar transport. The results suggest that 1) remaining aboveground tissues used anaerobic respiration as an emergency measure for energy/substrates supply; 2) Sink tissues reduced its demand after 2 h; 3) Sucrose synthesis enhancement around the 24th hour is likely driven by shoot re-growth. In total, the expression activity of 466 genes, involved in signal transduction, miRNA regulation, cell wall modification, metabolism, hormone synthesis, and molecule transporters, had been significantly changed at least twofold. These genes and their biochemical pathways identified provide insights into how plants respond to grazing at the molecular physiology level.

Our flute is based on an original from the Steiermärkischen Landesmuseum in Graz, Austria, made by Jean Hotteterre. The original is made from ebony and survives in such marvellous condition that it still plays wonderfully. We chose this original instrument because the sound is better balanced than many other surviving three-joint flutes. We make our “Hotteterre Flute” in ebony or grenadilla. These dark woods have a rich, resonant and powerful sound. On request we can also make this flute in stained boxwood and the sound is then finer and brighter. The pitch of our flute is a=392 Hz.
