He has been actively involved in official UNESCO application process and corporate/government fundraising since 2008.  He is past president of Lily Lake Pavilion Inc., and co-founder of the annual Pavilion Cup Pond Hockey Tournament and New Brunswick’s All American Soap Box Derby to raise funds for outreach programmes offered by the Pavilion for children and adults with financial and physical challenges.   His commitment as a volunteer has been formally recognized many times, including as recipient of the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal for community service (2012), recipient (on Stonehammer’s behalf) of Deloitte Innovator of the Year Award (2011) and recipient of City of Saint John Volunteer of the Year (fundraising – 2010).

The centre I work for and represent is heavily engaged in operating in ice because of the offshore oil and gas industry. Our main clients are the offshore oil and gas industry. These are the people who are continuously looking farther north. There are plans to explore in the Davis Strait, the Beaufort, and maybe even the Greenland straits and off the coast of Greenland. There's an economic driver for this, so as long as the price of a barrel of oil stays high they will look that way. You will see them start to move into those areas. On what they have going for them, they have significant dollars to put toward research to enable them to do that.

1. The Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) is the European umbrella organisation of 49 national associations of local and regional authorities in 36 European countries. CEMR is very involved with sustainable development and particularly active on issues related to climate change such as environment, energy and transport policy. In a publication published in March 2006 “Save energy, save the climate, save money. Guide for local and regional government ” CEMR proposes guidance to local and regional authorities on how to contribute to the mitigation of climate change.
