For reasons unknown, eulachon abundance have shown a declining trend in many rivers throughout their distribution in recent years. There was a sudden drop in returns to several rivers in 1994, most notably in the Fraser and Columbia. Eulachon have virtually disappeared in California and in the last two years they have not been seen in several BC rivers. Rivers which experienced virtually no returns in 2000 were: Stikine, Unuk, Skeena, Kitimat, Kemano, Kitlope, Bella Coola, Kimsquit, Owikeeno, and Kingcome Rivers. Concurrently, there has been a recent increase in the abundance of eulachons in marine waters, off BC and parts of Alaska. While this is an encouraging sign, previous observations of high eulachon abundance in marine waters were not followed by any apparent increases in spawning biomass in freshwater rivers.

To promote Canadian goods in Latvia, the Embassy of Canada to Latvia partnered with Canadian language labs giant Robotel Inc. and one of Latvia’s leading audio-video and presentation solution companies Certes, to organize a presentation on language laboratory solutions on 23 April, 2013, at Embassy premises. The presentation was given by Robotel’s Sales Manager for Europe, Africa and Latin America, Mr. Yanick Demers. The audience, composed of education specialists, representatives from the private and public sectors, were introduced to new efficient ways of learning languages through mobile technology. By mixing information technologies with language learning, Robotel demonstrated the use of a platform that could be easily mastered by learners at all levels, as much in instructor-led as self-study situations. The more than 30 attendees were impressed by the product’s simple handling and user-friendly interface. Robotel’s successful entry in certain countries, notably in the Czech Republic and neighboring Lithuania, is an encouraging sign for the Latvian market.
