Any voter who finds it more convenient can vote at an advance poll, held on the Friday, Saturday and Monday in the week before an election. Before 1960, voters could take advantage of advance polls only if they had one of the occupations specified in the law. A Progressive Conservative government, believing it had been disadvantaged by a summer election in 1953, introduced an amendment in 1960 allowing voters to use an advance poll, provided they swore an oath that they would be away from home on election day. The oath was dropped in 1977.

Thousands of acts of sexual violence, mostly against women, are documented each year as armed conflict continues to escalate. Yet even if the victims escape, social stigma can be one of the worst consequences they suffer afterwards. Previous studies show the many and often unexpected effects of stigma on women rape victims. Now a new report by the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative (HHI) looks at how men can also become a target of shame and ridicule should their wife or relative survive a crime of sexual violence. In this opinion piece, Jocelyn Kelly of HHI and Dutch trauma researcher Kimberley Anderson argue that it may be time to start including the men in the dialogue.  On May 18, the...

Just when Harris should have been enjoying the fruits of his success, a division took place in the parish over his handling of the finances. He had lost the trust of enough parishioners to ask Archbishop Denis O'Connor* for his unrestricted release from parish work, an exeat granted without question in April 1901. Harris soon set off on travels that were to last more than four years and take him to the Azores, the Caribbean, South and Central America, Mexico, and the southern United States. No idle tourist, he regularly contributed lengthy descriptions of his adventures to the

Lorsqu'on les demande, on nous les refuse. Lorsque, estimant avoir été traités injustement, nous avons demandé un témoin indépendant, on nous l'a refusé. On nous a menacés d'une audience disciplinaire.
Ms. Diane McMurray: Yes, in a way. You and I both know that if you're a political prisoner in a third world country and they want to beat you up and not leave any bruises, they use a rubber hose. Very often it's very difficult to prove categorically that what's happening to you is directly related to what's going on, but you know full well that is what is happening. We have both been summoned to a meeting since the grievance was laid, the harassment, and basically accused of things, but not told the details. When we asked, we were refused the details. When we said we felt this was unfair and we asked for an independent witness, we were refused. We were threatened with a disciplinary hearing. This has not been a fun time, trust me.

The two major political parties in East Timor were the Timorese Democratic Union (UDT), which wanted to retain links with Portugal, and the Revolutionary Front of Independent East Timor, known as the Fretelin, a left-wing socialist party that advocated independence. Violence was endemic, and Indonesia made an unsuccessful attempted to intervene politically in 1974. In August 1975, the Timorese Democratic Union organized a military coup with the objective of destroying the Fretilin. However, the Fretilin army, the Falinti, defeated the forces of the Democratic Union, and its surviving members fled to West Timor. The Portuguese administration withdrew from the capital, Dili, and communicated that it would no longer rule the colony.
