The Centre has recently developed an interactive web-based course on the basics of intercultural effectiveness. The Fundamentals of Intercultural Effectiveness, piloted in the spring of 2004, has now been rolled-out and completed by over 300 participants from the government, educational institutions and the private sector. "We had a need, based on client surveys, for a product that would offer the basics to people who couldn't necessarily attend a two-day or three-day classroom course" says Raymond Séguin, the Centre's Products and Services consultant. "The challenges were many; both from a technical and an instructional point of view. It's always difficult trying to create a self-directed course on soft-skills that is engaging and effective." Originally developed for Foreign Affairs Canada and International Trade Canada employees, the course was in such demand from other sectors that a modified version was produced. "Another interesting development, and unforeseen to tell you the truth, is that the course is being used more and more as a prerequisite for in-classroom training. Our learning specialists have adapted classroom modules to incorporate the online course. The benefits of this are two-fold: all participants come to class with the same knowledge base and valuable face-to-face time is freed up for additional learning and exchanges."

After my shift, I had some time to network with the employers myself. Even though the room seemed to be crowded, I did not have to stand in a long line to talk to company representatives. I think the fact that every company had at least two representatives helped a lot to meet student demand. It was easy to talk to the employers from the companies I was interested in. I talked with CLV Group, EY, RCGT, BMO and TD Bank, and I asked them all my questions regarding their experiences in their companies and touched on some topics non-related to the companies or jobs. They all were more than willing to share their insights with me and exchange contact information. Of course, at the end of the event I went to get my free LinkedIn photo, which took me 5 minutes.

The 21st Geneva Week for WTO Non-Resident Members and Observers will be held at the WTO from 15 to 19 November 2010. Geneva Week participants will meet the WTO's Director-General and the Chairpersons of the various negotiating groups to receive updates on the state of play of the Doha Development Agenda negotiations and other WTO activities. Key areas of the negotiations will be discussed, including agriculture, non-agricultural market access, services, trade-related aspects of intellectual property rights (TRIPS) and trade facilitation. Participants will also have the opportunity to attend the Trade Policy Review meeting of Papua New Guinea. The programme also includes a briefing on the preparations for the Third Global Review on Aid for Trade, where there will be an opportunity to discuss in detail the partner and regional organization questionnaires and the call for case stories. Participants will be encouraged to share their draft case stories or possible ideas for case stories, as well as, to ask questions and request clarification from the Secretariat on the self-assessment process.

As a feminist I fight for the cause of women and girls. I define my feminism as moving from ideology to action. I am a militant who has her convictions, personal experience as an African woman and professional experience as a health worker. With these I fight for the advancement and enlightenment of women, in particular illiterate woman and girls. As feminists we need to work on communicating our words, struggles and progress to the women we serve at the grassroots. We also need to make clear that we are feminist as well as African women who are proud of our heritage. We need to challenge the completely false perception that we are following “westernised” beliefs. Communication is the central tool of our movement. As Africans we face a communication problem as Anglophone and Francophone activists often find it hard to collaborate and share information. We can address this by always providing interpretation and making an effort to translate materials into relevant languages.

The methodology entailed analysing and sharing the experiences of teachers and students (teachers by profession). Emphasis was placed on the importance of having in-depth knowledge of the child to facilitate their integration into the country’s reality and society through teaching and in accordance with the characteristics of each child. Over the course of 1966, exchanges of experiences and opinions among teachers took place, the only possible means of redressing the profession in times of dictatorship. The initiative was repeated year after year and saw a steady increase in the number of participants.
