The Johann Magnus Bjarnason Monument honours the Icelandic-Canadian author, poet and teacher (1866-1945) who emigrated from Iceland to Canada with his parents when he was nine years old and later settled in the Arborg area. Bjarnason’s writing and publishing efforts had a substantial impact on Icelandic culture in Canada, providing inspiration and comfort to Icelandic settlers as they struggled to establish themselves. Bjarnason was awarded the Cross of the Falcon by the Government of Iceland for his contributions. The monument, which is a dramatic presence in the flat landscape around Arborg, marks the site of the former Bjarnason homestead, called ‘Arnheidarstadir’ (Icelandic for Eagle Heath Stead). Commissioned by the Icelandic National League in 1989 and designed by Arborg artist Nelson Gerrard, the monument also honours other pioneers who settled in the surrounding farming area, known as the Geysir District (named for a famous geyser in southern Iceland), in the mid-1880s.

If the event is of sufficient magnitude, first responders and their command structure may invoke your community's emergency/disaster response plan. Emergency Medical Services (i.e., ambulance and paramedic) personnel would be assigned to treat and transport injured personnel to the nearest medical facility. Employees with minor or no physical injuries may be evacuated to one or more Reception Centres operated by the municipal Emergency Social Services. There, employees would be provided with first aid; basic needs (blankets, food, water); emotional support and comfort. The Registration and Inquiry (R&I) Service operated by Emergency Social Services would assist in locating missing persons through their links with hospitals and the coroner's office. Notification of next of kin is the responsibility of medical and public safety employees. Many municipalities across Canada, as part of their emergency response plans, have a Psycho-Social Services Response Team which assists citizens affected by a major traumatic event. These teams have well-trained responders who can also assist you in case of a traumatic event.

The local Adventist Development and Relief Agency was among the leading organizations that began immediate collaboration with government agencies and other organizations locally and abroad to bring relief and comfort to those who suffered. The coveted “Man of the Year Award,” made annually by The Gleaner, Jamaica’s oldest and most respected newspaper, is normally given to an outstanding individual, but organizers broke tradition this year.

First, provide gentle encouragement and reassurance. Sometimes one or both parents struggled with nighttime wetting, and children need to hear this. It’s very powerful for children to hear that they’re just like Mom or Dad and that their parent could eventually stay dry at night. You might want to tell your children that wetting the bed is common and that it mostly is caused by how soundly they sleep at night. Good solid sleepers will keep on sleeping no matter how much their bladder tries to rouse them. Hearing these explanations can be very reassuring for children and parents alike.

“Access to quality palliative care services is essential for Canadians facing life-threatening and debilitating illnesses. I am pleased that our Government is helping Pallium Canada to expand its well-known program so that more people are trained to provide comfort, compassion and support for those who are nearing the end of life.”

"I'm p roud of the way my hometown came together to build this house -- it's going to mean so much to the children and families who come here needing care, comfort and time to be together," said Premier McGuinty. "It's a great legacy for Roger Neilson that recognizes his commitment to helping others."

Other volunteers across Canada devote about 40,000 hours every year knitting or crocheting Izzy Dolls. The first task of these dolls is to protect the medicines packed in our Humanitarian Medical Kits. Their most important job is to bring joy and comfort to children seen at clinics and hospitals.

There were many times, day and night, when I found myself in tears, praying for help and comfort. How grateful I am for personal revelation that brought customized answers, often more quickly than I had expected. I could feel that the Lord was aware of our challenges and that He was helping us win this battle.

Being happy is therefore a choice, a daily commitment, not always easy to stick to in our fast and changing lives. Luckily, the sun and the moon are there to remind us to cultivate this inner light in order to reconnect with our source of creativity and make our life a garden in bloom all year round.

The appellants are husband and wife. The husband was injured in an automobile accident on February 26, 1975. Liability has not been disputed. The only issue concerns the quantum of damages. The husband's claim was for damages suffered in the accident, and they were assessed at trial in the sum of $30,000, for general damages, with special damages in an agreed amount in excess of $14,000 not now in dispute. The wife's claim was expressed in the statement of claim in these words:

In my years among you, I have consistently been surprised—astonished is perhaps a better word—by how much your gifts and graces are strong and resilient and iridescent.  You probably aren’t aware of this in all its human complexity, but we, as your priests and lay leaders, experience it all on a regular basis.  I have seen people come to this church because other churches have ostracized, or rejected, or simply ignored them.  I have seen gay men come to this church because they have borne the brunt of Christian homophobia elsewhere.  I have seen believers come to this church because their own tradition no longer spoke to them, and because it was always judging them.  I have seen non-believers come to this church because the liturgy, or the music, or the words of welcome and support of one of you touched them in some particularly deep and powerful way.  Last Sunday, a man suffering from cancer thanked me, with tears in his eyes, for how we have offered him hope and comfort in confronting his fears at this time in his life.  We probably don’t even recall when or how we may have done this.  No matter.  God’s work is being done here.  God’s grace is being dispensed here.  God’s hospitality is being shared here.  And God’s abundant love is being widely and indiscriminately spent here.  This is the mark of truly effective Christian community: that it never worries about losing something in giving too much of itself.
