On an international level, Canada is an active member of the International Labour Organization (ILO), and in June 2009 adopted the ILO’s Global Jobs Pact, an instrument designed to guide national and international policies aimed at stimulating economic recovery, generating jobs and providing protection to working people and their families. The pact calls on governments and organizations representing workers and employers to work together to collectively tackle the global jobs crisis through policies in line with the ILO’s Decent Work Agenda.

The past year has also seen the disability community unite around a common priority -the need for investment in disability related supports. It has been a year where the community and CCD in particular, has shown considerable leadership and maturity. Our call for a 10 Year Action Plan to address disability issues has been heard and there appears to be some interest at the federal level and in some provincial jurisdictions on working toward a long range plan. However, that interest, as yet has not resulted in action. Continued work is necessary to demonstrate both that we are united and that we can prioritize issues.

Many years of study in Ofu and the assistance of dozens of students have allowed Steve Palumbi to draw two major conclusions: The first one is that Ofu’s corals have genes evolved enough to adapt themselves to unusually warm waters. The researchers have identified over 100 different genes that allow the corals to survive in waters often reaching 34°C. The researchers have also observed that the corals are able to live in pools subjected to extreme conditions. It appears that they are all linked to each other and have created a sophisticated biological adaptation mechanism. The different corals from the same colony withstand all together the temperature variations.

I would like to reiterate that the Government of Québec, in collaboration with the Government of Canada, will continue to stand with the representatives of Québec’s aluminum and steel sector, the trade unions, and the relevant ministries until Canadian and Québec aluminum and steel are entirely and definitively exempt from tariffs imposed by the United States. We have made $100 million available through the ESSOR program in order to support processors and ensure that they have the liquidity necessary to continue exporting. We will continue to defend our aluminum and steel industries regardless of the cost, because 30,000 workers and their families depend on it.

Mr. Chair, I want to echo the sentiments expressed earlier: that this is the kind of issue on which we must work together in common cause. As a result, I have had the pleasure of working with the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He has been seized of this issue almost from the point of his inception as minister. He has helped to initiate and bring into being important sanctions, both with respect to the nuclear threat and with respect to the human rights threat.

Chair of the ETF dockers’ committee with NTF Terje Samuelsen said: “The support being given to dockers here in Norway is invaluable. The struggle for an agreement at Risavika is just one example of the attack on dockers in Europe and around the world, and standing together to face that kind of threat head on is crucial. Companies want to erode good working conditions in our docks, crush unions and increase profits, but we can’t and won’t allow that to happen.”

“I am pleased to welcome Catherine al-Talli, a leading member of the Syrian opposition who has courageously worked against the Assad regime’s tyranny for many years,” said Baird. “Our discussions focused on how Canada can continue to support the Syrian people in their struggle for their democratic rights, as well as on the importance of Syrian opposition groups working together to present a viable alternative to the Assad regime.

I'm just having a lot of difficulty in understanding why the steering committee would have said that we should be requesting a legal opinion and a legal analysis from the Library of Parliament. What was on the minds of the people on the steering committee that they would ask for that if in fact we're going to go ahead with this decision? It sounds like the opposition is going to unite and will be voting unanimously in favour of this decision, when the steering committee has already said, well, you really need to have that opinion.

Jones never forgave the confederates for the means they had used to bring Nova Scotia into the union. He was, however, becoming sympathetic towards the federal Liberals. As early as the 1868–69 session of parliament, Jones established an alliance with Alexander Mackenzie*, both in person and through correspondence, and the tie would be a lasting one. Though Mackenzie supported confederation, he had not taken part in the tactics of effecting it; moreover, he and Jones held similar views on tariffs, government expenditures, and political corruption. In 1869 and 1870 Mackenzie expressed disappointment that Jones, who did not attend the sessions those years, was not present to act as Howe’s “chief opponent in your Province” and to “consolidate” the vote of the Nova Scotian mps. Although it is generally accepted that the Ontario Grits dominated the federal Liberals during the 1860s and 1870s, Mackenzie’s letters to Jones evince considerable solicitude towards Nova Scotians. Thus the Liberal attack of 1870 on the method of granting “better terms” to Nova Scotia was made, as Mackenzie explained to Jones, “in such a way as not to . . . hurt the sensibilities” of the province.

Missile defences protecting NATO cities and territory could in principle reinforce deterrence, enable the Alliance to navigate crises with greater steadiness and solidarity, and (perhaps in some cases) even dissuade adversaries from acquiring ballistic missiles that could be used to threaten Allied homelands. Missile defences could bolster deterrence because an adversary would face the risk of operational defeat of his attack as well as the prospect of NATO's retaliation. Moreover, with defences against such ballistic missiles, the Allies would be freer to consider options other than preventive or pre-emptive action against adversaries. Such defences could help the Allies reach consensus on strategy in a crisis and hold together during a conflict. Missile defence capabilities could also offer signalling possibilities in a crisis. NATO governments could exercise the option of announcing an increase in the missile defence alert level to send a message of cohesion, determination, and preparedness. The employment of Patriot to protect Israel from Iraqi missile attacks in 1991 demonstrated that missile defences can be employed for purposes of de-escalation, conflict limitation, and crisis management.

Organizational and human resource capacity are areas of significant concern within the communities, with issues of survival and sustainability named as high priorities. While visible minority organizations provide much needed services and leadership in their communities, they do so at great odds. Interviewees felt that there was a failure on the part of funders to appreciate that visible minority organizations do not have access to financial or training resources, necessary to build and sustain capacity.
