faisaient office de
sanctuaires et de logement pour les moines. Un grand nombre de ces grottes sont toujours habitées.

During the course of history, the 750 caves hewn into the vertical rock face in Bamiyan like a honeycomb initially served as prayer grottoes and dwelling for pilgrims and monks. Today, many of these caves are still occupied - by refugees. Several dozen Hazara families cook, sleep and live on the cliff side. These are modern cave-dwellers. They keep domestic animals, bake bread and bring up their children. One of

[21] A second witness testified on Halifax’s behalf on the valuation of the casemates and demi-casemates. He took the view that they should be valued in accordance with their replacement value less depreciation, and that there should be no devaluation to account for functional obsolescence. Such devaluation would be inappropriate since the casemates and demi-casemates were serving the function of a living history museum. He came to a valuation of $7,315,900.

Texaco carried out exploration and oil drilling in jungle regions inhabited by various Ecuadorean indigenous communities.3After the exploration phase, during which explosives were used and an incalculable number of boreholes were drilled into the earth's crust, Texaco drilled more than 350 wells. During the drilling of each of these wells, a huge quantity of toxic waste was produced, known as “drilling mud”.4

So it seems that we got the best of all worlds and this is both exciting and a little scary. Of course, we have great respect of what lies ahead us, because it won’t be an easy ride. But it is great to work for Babbel and be part of this story. I am personally proud to be a member of this team and together with the others I’m ready for any challenge.

Bionanoscientist Dr. Daniel Robert, Professor at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom, recently supervised an investigation demonstrating that bumble bees respond to the negative electric charges that flowers naturally produce. For the experiment, purple metal discs connected to an electric source were planted 30 centimetres above the ground. The discs represented artificial flowers and were covered in plastic to protect the bumble bees from electrocution. The artificial flowers were filled with either sucrose, a sweet substance that bees consume, or quinine, a bitter substance that bees do not consume. When no charge was applied to the artificial flowers, bumble bees would visit them at random, sampling both quinine and sucrose. However, when a 30-volt field was applied to just the sucrose-containing flowers, bees selected them 81 per cent of the time. When the charge was removed, the bumble bees resumed sampling the flowers at random, showing that they can both detect and respond to electric signals produced by flowers.
