would open an abyss that might not close for generations. Sir Wilfrid was referring to a clash between Canadians of French and British origin, but in the first few years after the First World War, it seemed that the hysteria of 1917 might extend to other groups as well. Anti-German sentiments, for example, did not fade entirely with the end of the war. During social disturbances such as the Winnipeg General Strike of 1919, anti-alien feelings were widely expressed. In the 1920s, hostility to racial and religious minorities swept across North America, and these feelings intensified until 1945. One way this hostility was expressed was in exclusionary electoral laws.

As we learned in Chapter 2, Sir Wilfrid Laurier feared the War-time Elections Act would open an abyss that might not close for generations. Laurier was referring to a clash between Canadians of French and British origin, but in the years immediately after the First World War, it seemed that the hysteria of 1917 might extend to other groups as well. Anti-German sentiments, for example, did not fade entirely with the end of the war. During social disturbances such as the Winnipeg General Strike of 1919, anti-alien feelings were widely expressed.
Chief Bevan was addressing, I think obliquely, section 672.85. That's the section that deals with the power to compel attendance. Certainly it didn't make sense to some of the review board members that the review board might be able to issue a summons or a warrant for somebody to attend for a hearing after they had failed to attend for a hearing for some specific date in the future. I think we thought that if the board were able to generate a warrant, it should be something like a bench warrant. If that person has already shown some disregard or decompensation such that they're not showing up for their hearing, an attending officer should have the ability to arrest that person and go through the same procedures that are set out in section 672.91, not to issue a summons or a warrant for some future date and hope that the person would show up on that date.

In Ex parte McCaud, Spence J. was adverting to the traditional distinction between a decision of a judicial nature and a decision of an administrative nature and not to the novel type of decision introduced by s. 28(1) of the Federal Court Act, which came into effect after the judgment was delivered in McCaud. Since McCaud, s. 16(4) of the Parole Act has been amended to require the Board upon referral to it of the case of a paroled inmate whose parole has been suspended, to make the necessary inquiries and upon reviewing the evidence so obtained, to reach a decision. This amendment serves to aid in characterizing the parole revocation function of the National Parole Board as judicial or quasi-judicial and in distinguishing between McCaud and the case at bar.

Under Grant, Queen’s also pioneered university extension programs in Canada in the early 1890s. Particularly notable were a program in English and political science in Ottawa and alumni theological conferences which became an annual event from 1893. The curriculum for both implied the denial of any sharp distinction between the sacred and the secular: Grant lectured on theological topics in Ottawa while courses on literature and political science were included in the program for clergy. Queen’s thus reflected the assumption of an established church that Christianity lay at the heart of national culture and at the centre of the educational task. Arts, science, and theology were to be studied together, and the educational ideal was a clear grasp of facts from the perspective of faith. Through the extension programs and the

The election of Donald Trump to the Presidency of the United States creates the potential for a sea change in policy that may have wide-ranging impacts on the U.S. and global economy. This impact is being reflected in the equity markets by way of elevated volatility, with many areas of the market moving sharply higher or lower after the vote. We believe the greatest surprise is the rise in interest rates driven by inflationary expectations linked to Trump’s mention of higher infrastructure spending during his acceptance speech on November 9, 2016. This has had a large positive impact on financials while negatively impacting utilities and REITs.

The complainant was informed that the Council could not assist her in examining the "judicial system" in general or in bringing back capital punishment.  It was up to the Attorney General of the Province to decide whether to appeal the dismissal or the sentence in the case described in the newspaper article.  As the second article referred to "suspects", the complainant was invited to consider the presumption of innocence, one of the most fundamental legal rules, as well as  the proposition that guilt by association with a particular ethnic group undermined and thwarted the search for the truth and that, fortunately, the laws of Canada did not condone such an unwarranted presumption.

». Such is the advice, given by Eratosthenes in the third century BC, to all those who fancied locating the legendary palace. In his famous maxim, the Greek geographer and mathematician is referring to the legendary artefact offered by Aeolus, god and Keeper of the winds. A most precious gift for Odysseus, the king who needed all the help he could find to safely sail back home to his wife and son. It’s a solid proof that people have forever been arguing over Homer’s poems. Should we take the geographic descriptions literally? Eratosthenes seemed to think otherwise and scholars have not been listening. The disagreements on ancient Ithaca have been going on since Antiquity.

While my wife sent a postcard to our family from the postal courier, the continent's southernmost, I left a greeting in the guestbook. Suddenly the door opened and looked one of the guides. "The weather gets worse. Captain says we must return to the ship immediately. "Almost jokingly asked if he was referring to Captain Fitz Roy, as if I were Darwin, but I realized it was raining really hard. "The oven is not thought to buns", I told my wife unable to control my terrible sense of humor.

The court found that the de minimis rule was not applicable to a small commercial operation. The mining was much more than "a shovel full or two of digging" referred to in R. v. Jackson (1994), and well beyond any de minimis defence. The accused was convicted on both counts and fined $2,000.

His was a passion based on experience. As a young boy he was threatened by the loss of his right leg due to a condition called osteomyelitis, and as a ‘charity’ patient on one of Winnipeg’s hospital wards his care was rather minimal. Had it not been for a dedicated surgeon, Dr. Stanley Smith, who was willing to provide treatment beyond the basics and without a fee, Tommy Douglas’ leg would not have been saved. This experience provided the roots to his conviction that “no boy or girl, man or woman should ever have to depend on charity to provide them with the health services they need.” He was talking about what has since become our system of Medicare.

The measures for the combined solution at the market place became a special type of construction site and made the Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe (ZKM) the setting for a special exhibition entitled “The city is the star: art on the construction site”. For instance, the installation “Pulled by the Roots” by Argentinean Leandro Erlich was a playful and ironic depiction of the current construction work.

The only significant change to the statement from June was the elimination of a sentence that had previously referred to monetary policy as remaining accommodative. At the press conference, Fed Chair Jay Powell indicated that removing the word accommodative from the statement did not change the path of policy. He also reinforced current Fed policy of hiking rates gradually in order to keep inflation near the Fed’s target of 2%.

5.2.5 Since the early 1990's, employees have received severance payments on separation or retirement based on a calculation of one month per year of service to a maximum of eighteen months. A review of records and interviews with staff indicated that this benefit has increased from a severance calculation of one week per year of service to one month salary for each year of continuous service not in excess of 28 years. The Audit Team reviewed the records of three LES who received severance payments on retirement in 1994, 1996, and 2000. Each payment was based on the enhanced calculation. One employee received ***, another ***, and the third ***. The Audit Team found no record of approval for this increased severance calculation as a permanent change to the LES benefits package. The LES themselves and the MCO are equally uncertain of approval, despite the practice. Correspondence that referred to a one-time change to severance calculations was reviewed but this was specific for employees laid off due to a 1993 downsizing exercise. It appears that this one-time lay-off package has now been incorporated into the permanent benefits package for LES and is applied not only for lay-offs, but also for severance on retirement. This enhanced severance payment has now become the practice at the Mission.
