[26]  There is no sensible criminal law policy that would justify more extensive rights of appeal in relatively minor criminal matters than those available in the most serious criminal cases. As the relevant provisions of the Criminal Code indicate, this court’s role in the appellate process in summary conviction proceedings is similar to the role played by the Supreme Court of Canada in appellate proceedings in indictable matters. Both the parallel statutory provisions and policy dictate that this court should, in [page649] exercising its discretion to grant a second appeal in a summary conviction proceeding, adopt a similar approach to that taken by the Supreme Court of Canada on applications for leave to appeal in indictable offences. Furthermore, summary proceedings are intended to be expeditious. Routinely granting a second full appeal on the merits from the trial decision hardly furthers that goal.

In van der Keuken's case it is the union representative that is the "poor sod" who is obviously squirming under the pressure of the questions, yet who is simultaneously a power figure as the responsible union representative speaking for an important institution (to the tradition and responsibility of which van der Keuken refers with an insert and a pan to a union poster "90 Years of Struggle"). After the union representative has been outed as a lackey of the entrepreneurs in a conversation lasting perhaps five minutes, van der Keuken does something unexpected: he adds another minute, in which the union representative is not seen in his professional function, but rather as a private person, singing out loud as he drives, the son visiting his old parents in the country once a week and feeding the chickens with them. This is also part of a procedure that works "from the periphery": the depicted center – the profession and the function and the power as union representative – is extended (at least for a moment) by the other side of the personality. Although Keuken does not weaken his argument at all in this way, he is protective of the human being.

Beasley contested Middlesex in 1820, losing to Mahlon Burwell. Four years later he was elected for Halton. Given his credentials, George Tiffany, an Ancaster lawyer, suggested him to William Lyon Mackenzie* as a “partisan” of reform and as an appropriate choice for speaker. In fact, the position went to John Willson in January 1825. Beasley’s time was past. In 1827 he was restored to the magistracy and from 1834 he served as an associate judge at the district assizes. Bogged down in financial difficulty since the Gourlay episode, he had been forced in 1819 to mortgage property (he then owned 11,350 acres) to the Montreal firm of François Desrivières* and Thomas Blackwood. Unable to pay off the mortgage or maintain the interest payments, he sold his Burlington Heights property in 1832 to Allan Napier MacNab*. Two years later, when MacNab began building Dundurn, Beasley was still scrambling to pay his remaining debt to Blackwood. In 1842 he owned one house and two lots in Hamilton, and acted as the local agent for several firms.

But by the same token, government authoritarianism has run its course and is no longer a viable option for a majority of Algerians. The régime is tolerated only because the Islamists are perceived as an even worse alternative. A 60% vote in favour of President Zeroual in the election on 16 November 1995 was a vote not to continue army rule, but to support a move toward democracy. Since 75% of the electorate voted in the face of Islamic fundamentalist threats that the ballot boxes would become their coffins, it appears a democratic culture may well be alive and thriving. More than 90 observers from the Arab League, the Organization of African Unity and the UN were satisfied with the voting process, in Algiers at least.

The intense journey in one place, this trenchant intersection between Kant and Deleuze as well, is outdated now. Today, Kant's legendary stay-at-home syndrome, avoiding anything that might have made him leaving Königsberg, and Deleuze's insisting on the non-movement of the nomad, both represent average, thoroughly normalised everyday life. In the face of this normality, there is a need for practices of opposition to the mechanisms of the information and control society using tactics, which - like the deterritorialised flows of capital - cannot be fixed in one place, cannot be settled down. Opposed to the flows of capital, however, these practices should continually create uncontrolled, self-determined lines of rupture. And here we find ourselves in the zones adjacent to artistic-political intervention within the context of the global protests with their spontaneous actions, tactical attacks and rapid appropriation of new situations, with their lines of flight in and through nomadic space.

Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people,

At the moment, two thirds, or 70 percent, of the world's people live in more or less democratic countries. But we only need two more countries, Indonesia and China, to get with the program and we’re over 95 percent. I think we may see Indonesia do it this year. It could also get very messy in Indonesia, but I’ve been there recently and I’ve learned by now to trust the optimistic. You know, I went through the whole Russian experience waiting for blood to flow, I went through all of the South African thing waiting for blood to flow. Now I actually don’t wait for blood to flow. I assume that quite likely they will get it right. So Indonesia perhaps a democracy by the end of the year. A shoddy, shaky one, but nevertheless, I think Suharto’s had it.

This article argues that the concept of ‘Intercultural Dialogue’ in its present dominant manifestation has run its course. Phipps argues that this concept is one which may work and make sense in stable, open and equal jurisdictions where there is relative ‘freedom from fear and want’, but that it is at best, limited and at worst, dangerous when used in situations of conflict and aggression and under the creeping conditions of precocity which mark out the present form of globalisation. In this, Phipps turns to field visits undertaken in the Gaza Strip in 2012 with the Life Long Learning in Palestine project. Phipps makes a connection to the work of Carolin Goerzig, with Hamas, to the conflict transformation practice of Jean Paul Lederach and to Graeber, Bigo and Scarry's theoretical and practical consideration of emergency and security conditions post-9/11. Phipps does so in order to argue for a re-politicised concept of intercultural dialogue such that it might fit the conditions of precocity with which the field of Language and Intercultural Communication is concerned.

One of the biggest drug companies in the Czech Republic - Zentiva (former Léčiva)  decided to reconstruct and modernize a worn-out building coming from the 70th. From the original building there was only the reinforced concrete skeleton left and the new design enlarged the building towards all sides. The original square ground plan was substituted with H shape so that it would be possible to enlarge office area and at the same time keep daylight quality standard.

Erik Verbeure, alderman of Sports for the last 24 years, is more than satisfied with recent developments. “Our previous field – which was almost 100 years old – was ready for its well-deserved retirement,” Erik explains. “When we got the green light to build a 7.4-hectare leisure complex in another location outside the center of the municipality, we saw our chance to move the football club and install an artificial grass pitch. The complex is the new place to be in Houthulst.”

The structure dating back to 1966 is getting long in the tooth and the façade needs extensive renovations which were last done in the summer of 1992. This time, however, the work is clearly going to last longer because in various areas the concrete façade needs reinforcing in order to be preserved. According to current planning, scaffolding on the north side has started in June, to be followed by the east side.

Mobility is everything, even in the office: the classical, rigid space allocation - work areas here, meeting rooms there, with a bistro area over there - has had its day. Today, the demand is for mobile room structures and variable functions. Because the modern office should inspire employees, encourage communication and network people, projects and ideas.

There are aromatic hints that your cannabis has passed its shelf life, too. Terpenes are responsible for marijuana’s fragrance, and they generally don’t like to stick around too long if the home isn’t up to standard. The wonderful floral aroma of marijuana disappears on moldy weed, and can be replaced by a moist, mildew kind of smell. Other unusual smells can also be signs that it’s time to get rid of your weed. For example, sometimes buds can take on the fragrance of their containers. Any of these circumstances could be red flags to tell you that your weed has gone off.

Awhile back a press package landed on my desk. It included a book that gleefully satirizes those who raise the alarm about climate change and ridicules the promise of renewable energy. If the publisher’s intention was to retread a worn-out argument and alienate all but the most rabid climate change contrarians and status quo champions, the book is a great success. I am not sure why it got sent my way. Perhaps because CIM Magazine covers non-renewable resources, it was presumed we have a stake in this line of thought.

Modern societies are built upon science. They owe to it their wealth, their power, and the certitude that tomorrow far greater wealth and power still will be ours if we so wish. . . . [Nevertheless,] armed with all the powers, enjoying all the riches they owe to science, our societies are still trying to live by and to teach systems of values already blasted at the root by science itself.
