This spreadsheet has been adapted by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada from the Fire Blight Daily Risk Estimation Model developed by Tim Smith, Washington State University. This spreadsheet uses the information from this website and automates the calculation of the risk assessment through the use of a formula. With the results of the risk assessment, you can make a judgement for yourself if you need to make an application of a control product or not. If the model indicates that the risk of infection is low enough that you are not concerned, you can save yourself the time and the money needed for an application, whereas if the model indicates that you will be at a high risk in the coming days, you may want to consider making a treatment.

Le

Since the mid-1990s, increase in wheat yield has stagnated in Switzerland and other European countries, after following a linear increase for decades. For this reason new possibilities have been investigated to increase yield potential further, for instance, using genetically modified wheat varieties that possess an additional gene for sucrose transport, thus allowing them to transport more sucrose to the grain. Greenhouse trials with these wheat strains have produced an increased yield of 5%. The genetically modified wheat strains are now being cultivated at the protected site in order to ascertain whether this yield increase also occurs under natural conditions.

The Vineland (V) apple (Malus) rootstock series has displayed a range of dwarfing potential and fire blight resistance in research test plots. Knowledge of their resistance to crown and root rot, incited by Phytophthora spp., is desirable before recommending them for on-farm testing, but information on this subject is lacking. Therefore, we tested the response of V.1, V.2, V.3 and V.4 clonal rootstocks to Phytophthora (P. cactorum and P. cryptogea) and waterlogging (0, 24 or 48 h per week for 4 mo) in a factorial greenhouse experiment on potted plants, using M.9 (moderately resistant to Phytophthora) and MM.106 (susceptible) as standards for comparison. Root fresh weight was reduced equally by both pathogens relative to uninoculated controls; rootstocks differed in their response to flooding but not to pathogen treatment. Shoot fresh weight was depressed by flooding in a rootstock- and pathogen-dependent manner. In general, all four V rootstocks had better root and shoot growth than MM.106 in the flooding treatments, and all grew as well as, or better than M.9.

Final Report of the Programme for Monitoring the Impacts of Streptomycin Use in Fire Blight Control 2008-2012 (Summary, 2013): In January 2008, the antibiotic streptomycin was first authorised in Switzerland for the treatment of fire blight in orchards. Similar exceptional approvals have been granted every subsequent year until an effective alternative solution can be found. The use of streptomycin is time-limited and associated with various conditions, one of which is that it must be accompanied by a monitoring programme. The Swiss Expert Committee for Biosafety (SECB) felt that, beyond the investigation of resistance development by Erwinia amylovora, the fire blight pathogen, there were further questions to be considered. The SECB therefore launched a multidisciplinary monitoring programme in cooperation with various federal agencies, research institutions, and other experts. The main goal of this project is to obtain data to permit an objective evaluation of the risks that could be associated with the use of streptomycin. The Final Report of this Programme was approved in February 2013. It can be ordered from the SECB Secretariat.
