Diseased fireweed (Epilobium angustifolium) plants were collected in Québec and organisms isolated from these plants were evaluated as potential biocontrol agents. Thirteen pathogenic fungi were isolated and three of these (Colletotrichum dematium, Seimatosporium kriegerianum, and Alternaria alternata) were virulent in initial screening assays. C. dematium was selected for further study because it was the most virulent pathogen, causing large necrotic lesions on leaves and stems of infected plants. Inoculum production was optimized on modified malt extract agar and the virulence enhanced by suppression of the conidial matrix with tannic acid and the addition of extracts of Aloe saponaria. The fungus was pathogenic to fireweed and E. lanceolatum, while other test species were very resistant or immune. Measurements of conidial and appressorial dimensions and its restricted host range support and hypothesis that the isolate may be an unreported form-species. Application of formulated conidia consistently provided 100% mortality of 7-wk-old inoculated fireweed rosettes within 48 h using 109 conidia m-2, from 10- to 15-d-old inoculum, and a 18- to 24-h dew period. Virulence was diminished in older plants. In field trials, growth of inoculated rosettes was reduced by 33%. These results suggest that C. dematium is a promising candidate for further development as a control agent for seedling fireweed in silviculture.

The tea tree is an evergreen, bushy tree endemic to Australia. The long branches have narrow, slender, bright-green leaves and, when in bloom, the tea tree is covered in cottony plumes of pretty white flowers. Australian aborigines have utilized the leaves for their medicinal properties for centuries, but it was not until the 20th century that tea tree essential oil started being produced in Australia from wild trees. In a move to perpetuate the species, tea tree cultivation has expanded over the last twenty years. The leaves are harvested in the summer, starting in December. The trees are pruned when the foliage is the thickest and the leaves contain the maximum amounts of essential oil. The cuts are done in such a way as to allow the tree to regain its foliage in two years. The extracted essential oil is herbaceous and woody.

Lotus pinnatus (bog bird's-foot trefoil) is a low-growing, multi-stemmed perennial herb with compound, pinnate leaves. The pea-like, yellow and cream-coloured flowers are borne at the end of a long stalk arising from the angle between the stem and leaf stalk. It is distinguished from other Lotus species by its perennial habit, papery stipules and yellow and white flowers. The umbel stalks are bractless or with a single membranous bract.

Residual oak groves may be found on the warmest southern slopes, namely comprising of oak (Quercus), wild service-tree (Sorbus torminalis), white beam-tree (Sorbus aria) and linden (Tilia). The undergrowth is represented by a variety of plant species, such as mezereon (Daphne mezereum), sword-leaved helleborine (Cephalanthera longifolia), as well as a variety of other plants, a large part of which are protected plant species. A typical landscape of this character is the area surrounding Žeberk near Jezeří.

A regionally rare plant, narrow-leaved vervain, was observed in the cultural meadows adjacent to the south cedar forest. This species transplants very well, provided the transplant site has similar physical and biological properties (full sun, dry fields, limited soils). Transplant and seed planting locations could include residential or municipal gardens, parks, or open space corridors. The most suitable open space transplant locations are within the Hydro Corridor west of Shea Road, between Fernbank Road and the proposed North/South Arterial Road.

One of the most remarkable features of Cactaceae are the areoles, axillary outgrowths, which produce trichomes, spines and leaves. The subfamily Opuntioideae K. Schum. shows the widest diversity of transition forms between leaves and spines, which represents anatomical evidence that spines and glochids are modified leaves. The purpose of this paper is to provide an anatomical description of the areolar structure in four species of Opuntioideae, in order that new anatomical homology between spines/glochids and leaves may be clarified. Different patterns of areole morphology are observed: 1) Austrocylindropuntia subulata (Muehl.) Backeb. showing terete and persistent leaves; areoles with persistent spines, glochids and trichomes; 2) Opuntia monacantha (Willd.) Haw. with terete caducous leaves and persistent spines, glochids and trichomes; 3) Opuntia rufida Engelm. with terete deciduous leaves and areoles with glochids and trichomes; and 4) Opuntia microdasys (Lhem.) Pfeiff. with early caducous leaves and areoles showing trichomes and leaf-spine and leaf-glochid transition forms. The development of the areolar structures is very similar in all species, following the description of the literature for other Cactaceae Juss. In O. microdasys is described a new anatomical character in the family: mucilage cells in the leaf-glochid transition forms, which may have functional importance for water storage in species devoid of persistent leaves.

To the North, the Hermitage Saint-Martin de la Roca (11th-12th centuries) used to be the chapel of a castle. It is located at the top of a peak above the Têt valley. You can admire now the "matorral", an area covered with bushes of different kinds. Fauna is the same as in the "garrigue": boars, foxes, stone martens, Montpellier grass snakes, swifts and buzzards. However snails are rare because the area lacks limestone, required to form shells. In the distance, the city of Perpignan lays in the plain. Turn back and behold the Canigou mountain beyond the "Aspres".

Sativa strains have their origins in the tropical areas of Asia, America and Africa. In fact, most of their morphological traits are a consequence of their need to adapt to this type of humid but temperate climates. Her thin, elongated leaves make for a better transpiration while her long, airy structure increases light penetration and accelerates the drying process, meaning plants are less likely to come down with botrytis.
