Convergence provides grant funding for practitioners to design innovative blended finance instruments. One of Convergence’s inaugural design funding grants was provided to the Rainforest Alliance to explore an investment and risk sharing facility for local financial institutions in Ghana to lend to smallholder cocoa farmers and their organizations for climate smart agriculture investments. It is anticipated that a guarantee mechanism will incentivize local financial institutions to lend using their own capital as well as support co-investment from private and public sectors. The Rainforest Alliance are working closely with Rabobank Investment Advisory Services throughout the design activities. This session will provide an overview of design activities and emerging learnings to-date, and will be an opportunity for the Rainforest Alliance and Rabobank Investment Advisory Services to solicit input and guidance from conference participants on the emerging facility design.

Canadian foreign direct investment (FDI) in Singapore has slowly but steadily climbed over the past ten years, totalling $5.1 billion in 2002. An estimated 70 Canadian businesses have established operations in Singapore. While most of the Canadian investment in Singapore is in the form of regional offices in services sectors such as banking and insurance, Canadian firms in the information and communications technology, aerospace, tourism, environmental and retail sectors also have a presence. Singapore is an important capital exporter (it had a total stock of investment abroad of $220 billion in 2001), but its FDI holdings in Canada were only valued at $130 million that year. Canada-Singapore FDI activity since 1993 can be found in Table 4 of the Appendix.

For the 2017 report, the theme of support for the private sector was chosen, with a selection of projects that were deemed to be highly relevant at their levels (supporting cooperatives, producer groups, local companies or local financial institutions). The results have been observed in terms of increased productivity and incomes, essentially thanks to the introduction of new practices, the acquisition of new skills, access to new markets and the resulting increase in production. However, the results are quite mixed depending on the organisational capacities of the cooperatives who receive support. For example, in Peru, the results were very positive for a coffee and cocoa cooperative which had a strong leader and the trust of its members. On the other hand, the results were very poor in another cooperative that had experienced organisational problems which undermined the trust of members and partners.

Chewett displayed a lifelong interest in Toronto’s financial development. He was one of the incorporators in 1833 of the town’s first insurance company, the British America Fire and Life Assurance Company. In 1855 he became chairman of the provisional board and one of the original directors of the Canada Permanent Building and Savings Society (later the Canada Mortgage Corporation). Following his retirement from government service Chewett was elected to the board of directors of the Bank of Upper Canada; his financial conservatism enabled him to become vice-president in 1849 but he resigned in 1856 in disagreement with the policies which were to lead to the bank’s collapse in 1866. He became the first president of the Bank of Toronto in 1856: his conservative and cautious nature provided the ideal leadership for a fledgling institution in a time of financial difficulties. He retained the presidency until his sudden death in 1862. To his children he left a substantial estate in the form of commercial property in Toronto and $76,000 in stocks in local financial institutions.
