University Research Professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Bill Montevecchi leads an interdisciplinary program on seabird behavioral ecology, probing their responses to environmental change and perturbation.  As Olympian survivors, seabirds are exploited as messengers of changing environmental conditions and degradation.  Students drive the research endeavors.  Micro-technology provides the tools to address previously insurmountable questions.  By tracking seabirds throughout the ocean, multispecies hotspots are identified leading to better understanding of ocean habitat vulnerability and resiliency.  We too are ocean messengers using seabirds to engage public discourse, to exchange information and to promote conservation initiatives. Complementary to the deepening of its own trade relations with the Western Balkan countries, the EC has also acted as the motor of further regional integration through the 'Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe' and thereafter the creation of the new Central European Free Trade Area (CEFTA), combining the individual bilateral FTAs in a single one.

The impact of slowing economic growth in the U.S. and Europe on China is a vivid illustration of how much China’s integration into the world economy has advanced. That integration has been driven thus far by China’s comparative advantage in labour intensive goods and its conversion into the “world’s factory floor”. But the nature of the competitive challenge is changing and will change much more as the Chinese economy moves up the value chain. The Chinese government is actively encouraging the move into higher value added segments and has set an ambitious target for R&D investment. China has emerged as a major player in the world economy - but is only beginning to emerge as a competitor in more advanced sectors. The implications of this second round of “emergence” will be as least as profound as the first, as developed economies see their relative advantage in many higher value industries or industry segments diminish. This is a driver behind the Government of Canada’s policies to spur innovation in Canada and enhance our competitiveness in the global knowledge economy.
