To the gentleman from science, Atlantic Salmon Federation is asking for more funding to find out about the decline of the wild salmon, and I recommend putting more money into that. The Atlantic Veterinary College has also asked for more money for lobster research. They indicate that they get about a third of a million dollars from the department for lobster research, but it's a billion dollar industry. I highly recommend that your department put more money in there.

Some CSPS sub-program managers, regional managers and secretariat officials (10 of 14, 71 percent) indicated that the School must strive toward being a centre of excellence in various areas of public management in order to be a credible voice in program design and delivery related to government-wide training. In this regard, they said that greater attention should be paid to building the research, training methodologies and management functions of the School. Respondents said that creativity must be rewarded rather than relying on traditional training techniques and technologies. Bringing in outside talent in these areas was identified as a necessary first step.

4.2.4 There is an LES Committee which has met with management four times in the past year. Minutes are kept of these meetings and the LES believe the meetings to be worthwhile. The Committee's meeting with the Audit Team indicated there is concern over job security with the downturn in Hong Kong's economy. In this respect, they would welcome more information regarding the on-going negotiations of the Chancery lease. They indicated a need to better understand the staffing and classification processes at the Mission. There were questions raised concerning the possibility of adding a longevity scale to the 10 step LES salary band. There are currently 25 LES who are at their maximum. Their biggest concern revolved around the heavy demands placed on the Receptionist position and the requirement for other Sections of the Mission to back up this individual. With the planned re-configuration of the office once the lease is finalized, the MCO is looking at a variety of options to resolve this issue.

Members of the Swiss trade union UNIA are fighting against the proposed site closure in Geneva of pharmaceuticals giant Merck Serono which threatens 1,500 jobs. Today the workers took their protest to the company headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany, and conveyed the message to management that their threat of strike action is only postponed and can be activated if the consultation period that ends 4 June fails to reach real settlement. The clear expectation is for the multinational to admit the economic viability of the Geneva site and maintain the jobs through negotiating on the proposals submitted by the union.
