Francis Maréchal received training in both music and economics. First Prize in flute at the École Nationale de Musique in Bobigny, he is also a graduate of ESSEC, one of France’s major business schools. He was Music and Dance Department Delegate for Val d’Oise from 1976 to 1982, while, starting in 1978, working as Cultural Programs Director at Fondation Royaumont. Appointed General Manager of the foundation in 1985, Maréchal has also administered various festivals, musical ensembles and corporate foundations. He also regularly goes out on culture engineering missions, especially in the field of old building re-using for cultural purposes. Established in the buildings of a 13th century Cistercian abbey it owns, Fondation Royaumont is now the largest Centre culturel de rencontre in Europe; between 1978 and 2010, it has invested 27 million euros in restorations and equipments; it has an operating budget of €8M and a permanent staff of 61.

After the success of the Loyola Law School and other projects such as the Winton Guest House (1983–87) in Wayzata, Minnesota and a 1986 retrospective of his work at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Gehry won the commission to design the Walt Disney Concert Hall (1987–), his first major project in his home city. Sensitive to the fact that acoustics are the heart of a concert hall, he designed the building from the inside out. He began with a convex-box shape for the interior hall, lined it entirely with wood, implemented sail-like ceiling elements, and finally contained it in curved exterior walls clad in stainless steel. The complicated building, which took years to design, is now under construction in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, creating a cultural center together with the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Visit of the University of Vilnius. Founded in 1568 by Polish Jesuits, on the initiative of the king Stephan Bathory, it was from its foundation an important cultural centre in the Baltic region. Mostly built in baroque style, we will admire its historical halls and the beautiful frescoes which decorate its arches and vaults. The complex of the University occupies a whole district inside the old town and is divided on 12 inner courts built during the last four centuries. Inside the main one, we can find the Lutheran Saint-John’s church (Sv. Iono) initially built in 1387 in Gothic style, and then rebuilt in the 18th century in Lithuanian Baroque.

Matanzas, city (1994 est. pop. 115,000), capital of Matanzas prov., W central Cuba. A port with a large, deep harbor, it exports sugar, fruits, and sisal. Industries in the city include sugar refineries and textile mills. Matanzas is located on the turnpike between Havana and Varadero Beach, and is a popular stopover for vacationers, who explore the picturesque Yumurí River valley and the caves of Bellamar, famous for their calcite crystal formations. Founded in 1693, it was once a pirate haven but by the early 19th cent. had become Cuba's second city, mainly because of the growth of the sugar industry. As the industry moved eastward, the city's importance declined. Matanzas remains an important cultural center for the area.

San Benedetto Po is a village in the province of Mantua (Lombardy) shaping up with the majestic Polirone Monastery that was found when Tedaldo di Canossa gave some lands to the Black Monks placed between Po and Lirone rivers. 70 years later, his niece, the countess Matilde di Canossa, gave the monastery to the Pope Gregory VII who entrusted it to Cluny Abbey influencing its life, liturgy and architecture definitively. The monastery has been living his most powerful time, becoming an important cultural center, but during the Medieval period it fell down because of a spiritual and economic decadence that lasted until Gonzaga dynasty became the administrators, worrying about its rebirth. During Renaissance, the monastery hosted philosophers, humanists and popular artists like: Giulio Romano, Correggio, Paolo Veronese. The following centuries brought war, depletion and sacks; it was suppressed during Napoleon Age. Nowadays, San Benedetto Po is an important touristic center, part of “Borghi più belli” club thanks to its monastery, the abbey, the centuries-old cloister and the civic Polirone Museum.
