In the Mauritanian desert there exist forty thousand manuscripts, the oldest of which goes back to the 13th century. These ancient manuscripts, testaments to the cultural wealth of a nomadic civilisation, continue to play an important role in the daily life of the Mauritanian people. The...

An even larger majority of the interview group (88.2%) replied that the stage at which this case was referred to the Centre allowed them to adequately prepare for settlement discussion. Nearly 60% of this group explained their answer by saying that either the issues were already clear at the stage at which the case was referred (that is, after filing of the first statement of defence), or that the case was not complex and did not need to proceed to discovery in order for settlement discussions to take place.

Since my father’s stroke, I pay close attention to the way other fellow entrepreneurs live; many of them living the way my father did – little or no exercise, long hours, high amounts of caffeine, sugars, stimulants and supplements in the hopes of keeping up with the grind. Occasionally I ask others why they don’t exercise, eat well, or take regular breaks for themselves—the excuses I get are endless. These excuses act as variations on a common theme: most people simply don’t prioritize their health, or deem it less important than everything else.

Until the 1960s Canadian immigration policy was based on ensuring that Canada would be a "European" nation in the New World. From the 1960s to the 1980s, Canada's approach to immigration was intended to build its international status as a "middle power." Today Canada is trying to be a "sophisticated niche player in the global economy". This means that numbers are not as important as the skill sets of immigrants.

[24] Here there is a multilayered wordplay between the French “dessus d’sous”, which means “upside down” coupled with the Arabic “souks” (also spelled “souq”) and the French indefinite article “des”, i.e. “some” or “the”. A souk is a street market, particularly in Arabic and Somali speaking countries; a place where people buy and sell goods, i.e. a bazaar. The effect is thus hearing both “upside down” and “Arab street market” at the same time, resulting in a double translation as either “They turned the City Hall upside down” and/or “They turned the City Hall into an Arab street market”. Furthermore, in French slang “souks” is also used as a synonym for “a mess”, derived from the lively chaos of a souk, thus resulting in a third possible translation, “They make a mess of the City Hall” [translator’s note].

When the Standing Committee on Natural Resources and Government Operations travelled to British Columbia, the members had an opportunity to see for themselves certain aspects of the forestry practices used currently on B.C.’s mid-coast area and in the interior. They discovered that the government requirements for all stages of forest planning and management have been tightened up significantly and are constantly being improved. Noticeable changes have been made since the Standing Committee on Natural Resources began its work in 1994, and since the implementation of the new Forest Practices Code, which became law in 1995. According to the testimony of the Council of Forest Industries (COFI) to the committee, significant progress has been made at all levels, from land-use planning and integrating logging activities with the surrounding landscape, to post-use renaturalization of forest roads.

Interpreting the vision underlying Triamant is in itself a challenge. The central theme is not how to build a residence, but how to offer various forms of care without impairing the experience of a normal residential facility. It is crucial that the residents' feeling of self-worth must in no way be affected by their need for care or assistance. The spatial challenge therefore lay in combining autonomy with service provision and social interaction in a sustainable and ecologically responsible manner. The far-reaching collaboration with the commissioning authority made it possible for us to translate the various elements of the vision regarding social interaction, openness, accessibility, and participation into a sustainable design. The various residential entities have been grouped around two courtyard gardens. Each construction phase will build 50 flats of varying sizes.

Our constitution does not copy the laws of neighbouring states; we are rather a pattern to others than imitators ourselves. Its administration favours the many instead of the few; this is why it is called a democracy. If we look to the laws, they afford equal justice to all in their private differences; if no social standing, advancement in public life falls to reputation for capacity, class considerations not being allowed to interfere with merit; nor again does poverty bar the way, if a man is able to serve the state, he is not hindered by the obscurity of his condition. The freedom which we enjoy in our government extends also to our ordinary life. There, far from exercising a jealous surveillance over each other, we do not feel called upon to be angry with our neighbour for doing what he likes, or even to indulge in those injurious looks which cannot fail to be offensive, although they inflict no positive penalty.
