On June 16 2016, the Greater Montreal selected Intelligent Community of 2016 from among seven finalists at the annual summit of the Intelligent Community Forum in Columbus, Ohio. The award salutes the accomplishment of communities in developing inclusive prosperity on a foundation of information and communications technology. Selected as a Smart 21 city in October and a Top7 finalist in February, Greater Montréal welcomed ICF judge and co-founder Robert Bell in April. This trip provided an opportunity to demonstrate the region's dynamism as well as the exceptional collaboration and commitment of its ecosystem. Over 125 partners collaborated to show what Montreal has to offer in terms of innovation in the fields of culture, healthcare, entrepreneurship, transportation, mobility, digital inclusion and citizen engagement.

ICA projects are divided into six thematic areas: Education; E-Government; Digital Inclusion and Connectivity; E-Health; Information Economy; and Policies for the Information Society. ICA projects are regional in scope or have adequate conditions for replicability. Since its creation, ICA has received approximately400 proposals, and provided support to over 80 initiatives (case studies, projects, virtual and face-to-face events). One of the Institute’s many strengths lies in leveraging funds from international funding institutions and other groups. ICA leveraged over two dollars from external sources for every dollar it provided to projects.

In action: SERPRO (Federal Data Processing Service) – the Serpro Cidadão Space offers free training to people who want to know about Internet facilities for obtaining government services and information for the public. Among its digital inclusion activities is the establishment of telecenters, which is done in partnership with the local community, prefectures and civil society institutions, to guarantee their sustainability. Instituted in 2003, this project is being offered as part of SERPRO’s social responsibility policy, and it is consistent with the Federal Government's Brazilian Program for Digital Inclusion which seeks to promote digital and social inclusion in the neediest communities. The program has already installed 153 telecenters in Brazilian cities, and eight more abroad (one in São Tomé and Principe, two in Cuba, three in Haiti, one in Angola and one in Cape Verde), totaling more than 1,847 donated computers.
