One of our most poorly known species (Pitocchelli et al. 1997). Canadian Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) data indicate severe decline in each of the past two decades, although the U.S. has non-significant positive trends. However, BBS covers little of the Canadian breeding range (more than 1/3 of routes detecting the species are in the U.S.), and BBS has low detection rates. Migration counts may prove useful in monitoring, but detection of this secretive bird requires banding, and numbers captured at many Ontario stations are too low for analysis. Impact of forestry practices is unknown. Species prefers dense shrub in boggy or wet boreal forest, but preferences differ in some parts of the range. Effects of different land uses on the species are unknown.

This species underwent strong declines in both abundance and in range size during the 1980s. For the next decade there was little change, but since about 2002 there have been small increases in both range size and abundance. These have been in parallel with recovery measures, including mandatory release of individuals taken as bycatch. While these recent increases are encouraging, the species is still at very low levels compared with the beginning of research surveys in the 1970s. Although there has been a general decrease in the level of fishing over its range, its recovery may still be limited by bycatch in fisheries in the deep waters in which it occurs.

Microsatellite and allozyme analyses on various species of bottom fishes (cod, Greenland halibut and redfish) and crustace ans (snow crab, northern shrimp) show that individuals from the Saguenay Fjord and from the St. Lawrence belong ta the same populations. The only genetic difference observed is at the Pan I locus of cod. This differentiation may be caused by selection that would act in the Saguenay Fjord, rather than due to the genetic isolation of the population. Complementary data available for bottom fish (elemental composition of otoliths, body morphometry, and para ice fauna) show clear differences between the aguenay and the St. Lawrence. These differences suggest residence of individuals in the Saguenay and the St. Lawrence for a large proportion of their life cycle. Considering the low larval survival observed in the fjord, this review Suggests that the bottom fish populations from the Saguenay represent sink populations whose recruitment depends largely or solely on migration of juvenile from the St. Lawrence. Although there are no complememary data for crustacean species, it is possible that migration and residence are processes operating for those species as well.©2009 RSE inc.

There was a negative correlation between the amount of timber removed and the total number of individuals trapped in a plot. There was a negative correlation between the mean daily catch of individuals and the amount of timber removed. Species richness was greatest in the plot with 30% timber removed, followed by the uncut plot, then the strip cut, and least in the plot with 100% timber removed. There was a negative correlation between the mean daily catch of species and the amount of timber removed. Seasonal species accumulation curves showed the clearcut had a 5-day lag compared with the other plots. The number of species shared between the uncut plot and a prescription was negatively correlated with the amount of timber removed. Quantitative similarity indices ranked the plots in accordance with the amount of timber removed, i.e., the more timber removed, the lower the similarity coefficient when compared with the uncut plot. Rank abundance plots were good fits to theoretical log series curves for all prescriptions, including the uncut plot. Species abundance plots took the form of truncated log normal distributions for the uncut, selection-cut, and strip-cut plots. Species abundance plots for the clearcut were typical of those of an impoverished site. McIntosh's diversity index, U, was the only diversity statistic that ranked the four plots in accordance with the severity of the prescription.

The tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris (Heteroptera: Miridae), is a highly polyphagous pest that feeds on a broad range of economically important crops in North America. Flying L. lineolaris adults can move from crop to crop rapidly and easily. Little is known about the movement of L. lineolaris in or near vineyards. From May to October 2002 and 2003, 39 white sticky traps were positioned inside and at the periphery of a vineyard to study the movements of tarnished plant bug adults. Tarnished plant bug captures were most numerous from the end of July to mid August, with captures of ca. 3000 individuals in one week. During the vegetative season, most individuals were captured flying in and around the vineyard at a height of between 40 and 60 cm. The frequency with which the weeds were mown affected the numbers of adults captured. At the periphery of the vineyard, tarnished plant bug was more abundant near perennial vegetation, which tends to be stable (an apple orchard, a spruce wood), than in the vineyard where agronomic activities changed the availability of food. The tarnished plant bug adults did not hibernate in the vineyard. It is suggested that appropriate weed management will reduce the abundance of tarnished plant bugs in vineyards as it would deprive them of a number of suitable hosts for feeding and oviposition.
