In 1833 visionaries built a small wooden lock in Bobcaygeon to help the lumber industry. Over the next 87 years the Waterway grew to encompass 44 locks including 37 conventional locks, 2 flight locks, 2 hydraulic locks and a marine railway along the 386 km ribbon of Waterway connecting Trenton on Lake Ontario to Georgian Bay. Ever since the waterway opened it has been a recreational and commercial route, provided for conservation, water quality and navigation through the region. The Waterway attracts about 1.4 million visitors each year coming to experience the historic system, watch the boats and enjoy the peaceful environment. Travelling the 386 km by boat takes about a week one way, along the journey you will find The Trent-Severn Waterway is an engineering marvel that has stood the test of time and is National Historic Site of Canada.

The Ottawa River is the source of drinking water for many local communities. The City of Ottawa is the heaviest of these users, drawing 341 million litres of water from the river daily at the Britannia and Lemieux Island purification plants. Historically, the Ottawa River has been a transportation route for native peoples, fur traders, and the timber industry. In the 1840s, saw and grist mills were located at Chaudière Falls. This site later developed into a sprawling complex of hydroelectric plants and saw, pulp and paper, and carbide mills, all utilizing the water and exploiting the energy of the falls. Some of these industries remain in operation today. Recreation is now a major use of the river.

Although the wood industry is a mainstay of the Canadian economy, revenues have been too narrowly based on products intended for construction and renovation of low-rise residential buildings. The wood industry views its expansion into the mid-rise residential and non-residential building market as the best means of increasing its contribution to the Canadian economy. This view is based on two recent developments. First, there is a renewed interest by design and building professionals to specify wood in the construction and renovation of mid-rise residential and non-residential buildings. Relative to other structural materials, wood products have many advantages, including reduced construction time; lighter weight (which minimizes foundation costs); and being a “green” carbon-neutral, low production energy option. The second development is related to recent changes in building codes to focus on presenting expected performance levels in buildings instead of prescriptive rules. This would give designers more opportunity to apply advanced design and construction concepts and methods, and to specify alternative materials.
