Although liquid fuels are expected to remain the most popular form of fuel for at least the next 10 to 15 years, the global demand for oil is expected to flatten or decline according to ExxonMobil (by 2040), Shell (by 2026) and Deutsche Bank (by 2018). These estimates hinge on expected changes in the availability of alternative energy sources, hybrid cars, higher emissions standards, consumer incentives and the potential electrification of the global vehicle fleet. On the other hand, it should be noted that a shift to alternative forms of energy for certain parts of the transportation sub-sector, such as the air and marine industries, may prove to be more difficult. In any case, the current infrastructure overhaul required to support a massive switchover will bring many opportunities as well as challenges.

This working paper shows that from 1986 to 1996 the Canadian unemployment insurance (UI) program redistributed significant monies between industries and provinces and that there are a considerable number of firms in Canada that are predictably and persistently receiving subsidies through the UI program. Previous studies have shown that the major flow of funds is from the service industries toward the primary sector and construction and from Ontario toward the provinces east of it. Corak and Chen’s study corroborates those findings but moves beyond aggregate analyses and shows that a firm’s own behaviour, practices, or characteristics are twice as important as its industry or geographic location in explaining whether or not it is a net beneficiary of or net contributor to the UI program.

Chibougamau’s history is directly linked to the richness of its soil, and the Town has long depended on the exploitation of natural resources. Today, although it is still fed by its mining and forestry heritage, the town has integrated service, energy and tourism industries to its economy; it is indeed now recognized for its important assets in terms of business and entrepreneurship. Following the closure of the mine in 1991, Chapais’ primary industry has been forestry, and the community opened the first cogeneration plant in Quebec to produce electricity from the sawmill's wastes.

Service industries should fare better, as these economic factors have a smaller impact on them. Employment growth and rising incomes particularly benefit sales and service workers (in industries such as retail trade, personal services, food service, etc.). Furthermore, the coffers of some companies are being boosted by an expansion in regional tourism products (ecotourism and adventure tourism, conventions, etc.) and international cruises, with a slight increase in demand in a few occupations in tourist transport, retail trade and entertainment and recreation.

But simultaneously, the part that goes with that is that you can't, I believe, hamstring our own financial services industries while simultaneously allowing those who aren't constrained by similar rules to come in here and compete. I believe in the level playing field and I think it's going to be necessary if we're going to continue to grow.

Another workshop at the conference addressed the issue of the trafficking of women and girls in Canada. Speakers Jill Hanley of McGill University, Annalee Lepp of the University of Victoria and doctoral candidate Anette Sikka of the University of Ottawa all noted that the trafficking of women is almost always perceived to be associated with prostitution. In fact, only a small percentage of the victims of trafficking are forced into prostitution. Many are also forced into working in a domestic environment, the service industry, or a manufacturing setting, and a large portion are brought to Canada to be married or adopted.
