Krill along the British Columbia coast range up to 25 mm (1") in length, but average 16 mm (5/8") in length. Krill undergo a daily 'diurnal' cycle, where they spend the daylight hours in the twilight depths of the ocean (~100 m or 300'), out of sight of their predators (mainly finfish and baleen whales). As the daylight decreases, the krill rise to the surface to feed in the dark on phytoplankton. In the morning, as the sky gets brighter, the krill will return to the twilight zone. A clear day may push the krill as deep as 150 m (450'); on a cloudy day, the krill may be at depths of only 60 m (180'). Krill are not distributed evenly within a body of water; they form characteristic 'clouds' or patches of high biomass in some areas, whereas other areas may be devoid of krill.

« Dès lors, nous étions livrés à nous-mêmes pour atteindre le sommet pendant les vingt prochains jours et s’en sortir les trois jours suivants. Nous avons été suffisamment chanceux pour parvenir au sommet le 4 juillet ! Pendant ce temps, il n’y avait que deux autres groupes sur ce pan de la montagne. En termes d’élévation, c’est l’une des plus hautes ascensions du monde avec 5500 mètres depuis le point de départ. Le sentier suit le glacier Muldrow passant par les deux principales cascades de glace, la petite et la grande. Nous avons ensuite grimpé sur la crête de Karstens, une crête en lame de couteau longue de plusieurs kilomètres avec des pentes à 45 degrés. C’est ainsi que nous sommes arrivés au glacier Harper. Notre campement se situait à 5200 mètres d’altitude. Nous y avons passé quatre jours en attendant un jour clair pour atteindre le sommet. Dans l’ensemble, nous avons été très chanceux vis-à-vis du temps, en évitant les grandes tempêtes. Travers et moi-même avons chuté dans de petites crevasses, mais nous avons réussi à nous en extraire seuls. Nous avons également déclenché une petite avalanche sur la crête de Karstens, mais heureusement nous ne nous sommes pas blessés. Sagement, nous avons trouvé un autre itinéraire pour cette section. Une autre partie intéressante était lorsque nous avons trouvé un vieux sac de couchage. Nous pensons qu’il avait appartenu à mon père avant qu’il ne soit perdu dans le vent lors de son ascension en 1974. »

"From there on we were on our own, taking the next twenty days to reach the summit, and three more to get out. We were lucky enough to summit on the 4th of July! During that time there were only two other groups on that side of the mountain. Elevation wise this is one of the tallest climbs in the world, gaining 18,000 feet from the starting point. The route follows the Muldrow Glacier passing two major ice falls, the Lower and the Great. Then we climbed to Karstens ridge, a several mile long knife edge ridge with grades up to 45 degrees. That leads to the Harper Glacier. Our high camp was at 17,000 feet, where we spent four days waiting for a clear day to summit. Overall we were very lucky with the weather, not having any major storms. Travers and myself both took minor crevasse falls but were both able to extract ourselves. — We also triggered a small avalanche on Karstens ridge, but luckily we were not harmed in any way. We wisely found an alternate route for that section. Another interesting part was when we found an old sleeping bag that we think belonged to my dad before it was lost to the wind on his 1974 climb."
