Thirty-seven new species were named and described. The Arctic Odyssey exhibition was developed in cooperation with the community of Igloolik, effectively twinning science and traditional knowledge. A travelling version of this exhibition will celebrate the creation of Canada's newest territory of Nunavut next year.

Between 1750 and the 1850s, European midwives underwent a process of professionalization through scientific knowledge and schooling. Once educated, they obtained a legal monopoly over assisting birth to the detriment of traditional midwives, although without causing the disappearance of the latter, until the first half of the twentieth century. The implementation of a policy of widespread education for degree-holding practitioners enjoying state protection enabled the welcome reduction of maternal and infant mortality. In addition, it ensured the continued existence of the unique character of this strictly feminine medical profession (until the 1980s) and field of intervention: giving birth. The medicalization of childbirth which it led to, supplemented the function of caring for mothers and newborns, without substituting it altogether. The transfer of most deliveries to hospital establishments during the second half of the twentieth century reduced their visibility, but did not diminish the essential role these practitioners play in monitoring pregnancy and childbirth.

Climate change is widely believed to be contributing to an increase in the frequency and intensity of native and invasive alien forest pest infestations and other disturbances such as wildland fire. Canada needs the scientific knowledge to understand, forecast, mitigate and adapt to natural and human-induced impacts to forest ecosystems. Through this sub activity, NRCan conducts research and analysis to develop scientific knowledge of forest disturbances (e.g., pests, fire). This scientific knowledge is used by federal, provincial and territorial governments and agencies (both policy-makers and regulators) as well as the forest industry to assess risks, forecast impacts and develop mitigation and adaptation strategies related to pests, fire, and climate change. CABRR research is centred around several priorities including: development and maintenance of regulatory research activities required to keep Canada at the forefront of this international effort and establish the knowledge and scientific basis for risk assessment and regulatory approval of genetically modified finfish, exploration of the breadth of effects arising from genetic modification of finfish, assessment of validity of experimental and modelling approaches currently utilized to generate empirical ecological risk assessment data for genetically engineered finfish, evaluation of the efficacy of methods for bio-confinement of transgenic aquatic organisms, provision of science knowledge to inform the scope of organisms to be captured within the biotechnology regulatory trigger, and communication and sharing of research results. CABRR will ensure transgenic finfish are available to support planned research activities, assess the morphological, genetic and behavioural effects of genetic modification, examine the interactions between genotype and environment and attempt to identify a suitable surrogate for transgenic fish in contained systems, examine multigenerational genetic interactions among transgenic and wild conspecifics, and assess the suitability of polyploidy as a bioconfinement approach for genetically modified finfish. This COE will continue to strengthen the existing regulatory research program while putting into operation a set of complementary and effective communication and information sharing activities to make the research effort readily accessible for regulatory advice, including risk assessments related to transgenic species.
