La croix suisse apparaît pour la première fois dans les livres d’histoire en 1339. En ce temps-là, les Bernois aimaient coudre sur leurs habits deux bandes d’étoffes blanches en forme de croix avant de partir au combat.
The Swiss cross first appears in the annals of history in 1339. At that time, Bernese soldiers used to sew two strips of white material onto their garments before marching into battle. The name ‘Switzerland’ derives from the Canton of Schywz, whose troops played a key role in the wars of the Old Confederation against the Habsburgs and also played a decisive role in the European mercenary trade. After the Battle of Sempach in 1386, the name “Swiz” or “Sweiz” became legendary. The German chroniclers now used this name to denote all members of the Confederacy. The first written testimony of this is a document of King Sigismund dated 1415, which contains the first mention of the term 'Swiss'.

Mais la Confédération n’étant pas particulièrement intéressée par une telle concurrence a refusé toute aide financière. Les Bernois se sont donc vus contraints de rechercher les financements nécessaires ailleurs.
When the Gotthard Railway started its service in 1882, the Canton of Berne found itself cut off from the principal north/south transport axis. Small wonder, then, that people in the capital were soon making plans for a transit connection of their own. The Swiss Confederation, however, was uninterested in such a competitive situation and refused to provide any financial aid. Thus the Bernese people had no other option than to raise the necessary funds else-where. They struck lucky in Paris: in 1871, France had lost the border-crossing point in Basel to Germany, and leading industrialists were therefore interested in participating in an international transit railway through Switzerland, with Delle becoming the new border-crossing point between Switzerland and Italy.
