The aquatic habitat/fisheries team looks at the creeks, drains and ditches in the study area to determine which ones provide habitat for fish and other aquatic life. They record plant species observations and capture fish and aquatic invertebrates (e.g., insects and snails) for identification. A device known as an electrofisher, which produces a localised electrical shock to temporarily stun fish so that they can be more easily caught, may be used. Water depth, width, and amount of cover provided by rocks, logs, overhanging trees, etc., are also recorded.

The argument that the premises of the employer was the place of employment of a truck driver rather than the place where he regularly delivered logs, where, at that moment the labour dispute existed, was not retained. In fact, even though the claimant was not employed by the employer who was a party to the labour dispute, at least part of his employment occurred at the premises where the labour dispute existed3.

When I explained to this gentleman how roe-on-kelp was produced, I described to him one method, called the “closed pond” method. But there is a second method. When the herring spawn naturally, you take the logs, with no web in them, and put them into the same proximity where the herring are spawning. They'll assume that this is a natural spawning bed for them and they'll spawn naturally. In other words, you don't have to capture them. You take the capturing part out of it and you do everything naturally.

Humid, hot, windy or dry weather can promote TPB migration from weedy alternate hosts or crops into orchard blocks. Adult TPB overwinter under leaf debris, bark, logs and under broadleaf weed litter. They become active on warm days early in the spring and may attack developing buds and fruitlets. In late spring around early May and June, they migrate to herbaceous weeds, flowers and vegetables where they lay eggs into stems and stalks.

Forestry railways were comparatively short-lived lines that were built cheaply and frequently below the standards of mainline railways. The tracks were characterized by sharp curves and steep grades that matched local terrain and the logging company's limited budget rather than rigid railway standards. These lines served as feeders to more central loading areas where the rough logs that had been transported on simple log cars were loaded onto more substantial flat cars pulled by conventional locomotives or moved by water to mills for processing.

The company specialises in the manufacture of high-quality wooden blocks for the butchery industry, under the brand name Chabret. The use of wood for blocks has been permitted and managed by the European Union since 2006 and wooden blocks are used by most small-scale butchery companies. It is particularly well adapted to some cutting operations particularly for pieces containing bone; and is valued by butchers since it is easier to maintain than PVC boards which are difficult to plane, scrape and clean.

8.1. Protect entrances at equipment access points and establish single site entry and exit. e.g. place a large log tight to each bank to minimize pressure on the bank from the tracks. Excavators should use their boom bucket on the opposite shore and elevate the front tracks and gently pull to take pressure off the tracks. Operators should travel slowly so as not spin tracks and thereby avoid moving the logs, tearing the stream bank or cycling dirt into the watercourse. While large logs flat cut on the bottom are preferred, small swamp mats may also be used.

After the British succeeded in capturing Port-Royal in 1710, the battered fort needed repairs to make it serviceable. Acadian contractors up the Annapolis River agreed to cut wood for the fortifications and float the timber down to the fort. Supplying timber for the fort, however, would have disastrous consequences. The task was thwarted by Aboriginal warriors who harassed the Acadians for helping the English and cut adrift their rafted logs. The situation became dire enough that Governor Samuel Vetch decided to send a force upriver to placate the region.

It was not until the beginning of the 19th century that George Simpson, Governor of HBC in Canada, introduced the York boat. The York boat evolved from the design for Viking longships and could carry much more cargo that canoes. The drawback was that they were also much harder to portage. Roads through the woods had to be cut and the boats rolled on logs to the next body of water.

On 21 March 1870 Wright introduced a bill “respecting the marking of timber.” This bill was applauded by all the leading lumbermen in the Ottawa valley, including Ezra Butler Eddy*, George Bryson, John Maclaren, and John Mather*, because it would establish the ownership of sawlogs. Shortly before leaving politics, Wright launched an attack in the house on D’Alton McCarthy and the adherents of the Equal Rights Association, for, among other things, seeking to abolish the system of Catholic and Protestant public schools in Manitoba. As an educated man, Wright respected French culture and championed the cause of equality for the two founding peoples. For him, the greatness of Canada depended on respect for the typically British virtues of fair play, justice, and truth. Wright had always detested fanaticism and cliques. In an earlier period he had come to the defence of the Ottawa valley Irvingites, a group inspired by the Reverend Adam Hood Burwell*. These disciples of Edward Irving, who preached the imminent second coming of Christ, were in fact persecuted for their beliefs. Wright, who was a liberal in matters of religion, assailed the people of Hull for harassing the sect.

The early colonization of newly created coarse woody material (CWM) by beetles was studied in aspen mixedwood forests at two locations in north-central Alberta. Healthy trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) trees, in old (>100 years) and mature (40–80 years) stands, were cut to provide three types of CWM: stumps, bolts on the ground (logs), and bolts suspended above the ground to simulate snags. Over 2 years, 1049 Coleoptera, representing 49 taxa, were collected. Faunal structure differed little between the two locations. Species diversity was higher in old than in mature stands, and higher in stumps and logs than in suspended bolts; however, these "snags" tended to have higher abundance when compared with stumps and logs. Overall beetle abundance and the catch of wood-boring beetles was significantly higher in the first year post-treatment, mainly because of the ambrosia beetle (Trypodendron retusum (LeConte)) and one of its predators, Rhizophagus remotus LeConte; however, beetle diversity was higher in the second year, suggesting that early wood-boring species may "precondition" the wood for a number of succeeding species. The high turnover rate of taxa and spatial or temporal variation in faunal structure suggests that effort focused on habitat classification of CWM will facilitate management to conserve saproxylic faunal diversity.
