The Rideau Canal could not have been built without the hundreds of labourers who poured into Bytown during its construction, many of whom were Irish, Scottish, and English immigrants lured by the promise of land and steady work. While some made the voyage with the help of government-assisted programs, others emigrated out of sheer desperation to escape the squalor of their native countries. As Bytown’s population swelled with each wave of immigration, social class, kinship, and economic circumstances influenced the settlement patterns of its new arrivals. The canal played a clear role in these settlement patterns as well, effectively dividing Bytown into Upper Town, home to Bytown’s wealthier Scottish and English immigrants, and Lower Town, home to its poorer Irish and French-Canadian population. With each group’s perceived upper- and lower-class status reinforced by this geographic divide, their respective cultural traditions and religious affiliations became an ongoing source of tension.

Social democracy has had a huge influence on our politics, and so has the history of free trade unionism, but we have never been socialist. We believe in markets because we know that they are better at allocating capital and labour than government, and because free markets make for free peoples. We also know that markets alone cannot distribute equitably between classes and regions. Hence a political community cannot cohere if it is not sustained by public provision of health care, unemployment insurance and social security, along with federal redistribution of revenues from rich provinces to poorer ones.

Anapana is a simple technique that helps develop concentration of the mind. It is easy to learn, objective and scientific. Observation of the breath is the ideal object for meditation because it is always available, and it is completely non-sectarian. Anapana is very different from techniques that are based on artificial regulation of the breath. There are no rites or rituals involved in the practice or presentation of Anapana and it is presented in a non-sectarian format. This approach is traced back to the Buddha, who rediscovered and taught this technique 2500 years ago. The Buddha never taught a sectarian religion; he taught Dhamma—the way to liberation—which is universal. Following this tradition, this technique is presented in a totally non-sectarian approach. For this reason, it has had a profound appeal to people of all backgrounds, of every religion or no religion, from every part of the world.

They were not the only Latin peoples living there - the entire region was populated by city-states who maintained close cultural and religious ties, sharing festivals such as Feriae Latinae. Rome itself became a city around 625BC, when a group of separate settlements from various hills joined together. At that time, the dominating culture in the region was Etruscan, from which the Romans adapted many of their beliefs, rituals, and military traditions. As Rome grew larger to encompass more and more local tribes, so too grew its army, from a founding force of around three thousand infantry supported by three hundred horsemen, to the imposing, world-beating Legions of the Roman Empire. Social class dictated the army's quality, as each warrior brought their own equipment and the poorest were excluded due to poor-quality weapons and non-existent armour. However, citizens considered military service a duty to the state, meaning that Latin warriors were never in short supply.
