The collages appeared late and quite by chance in Matisse’s life. Illness slowed down his creativity, with Matisse spending most of his time at home. He was given six months to live and whilst fighting cancer as well as the accompanying pain, Matisse began to transform his home into an art studio, creating one piece after another. He soon came up with the idea of cutting paper out of large sheets of white paper. This technique was less tiring, allowing him to remain seated whilst at work. Without even realising it, Matisse had invented a new art form.

Hayeur’s work is militant in nature and it is interesting to see that the technique of composition of the image recalls an earlier militant period in art, the photomontages of the historical avant-gardes of the first decades of the twentieth century. There too, the essential mode of articulation was to bring together, on the same surface, cutouts from photographs of various realities and to let them produce discordant effects to reflect the class of forces of modern society. There is a difference, however, that time has made. Then the debate centered around the sharing of resources of a plentiful planet. Now, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, when it looks as if Alfred Hitchcock is going to be in charge of the weather, it is the fate of the planet itself that is the object of debate.

Most of the photographs on this site are my own (Viducus Brigantici filius’). Exceptions will be noted. On the first page, a bas-relief from the Treveran region depicts a sea creature; it can be found in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Trier. The error page carries the famous relief of the man-eating she-wolf in the Musée Archéologique d’Arlon. The ram-headed snake that can be seen on the introduction page, among others, appears on a plaque of the Gundestrup cauldron (the original photo is in the public domain). The background design is my own creation based on decorative elements on monuments from the Treveran region. The collages of flags and notable writers are also my creations, but based on free-licensed images from Wikimedia Commons (of which Goethe, Hugo and Shakespeare are notably in the public domain); the same is true of the maps, which I’ve created from public-domain map resources. Unless otherwise noted, I license the text and images on this website under a Creative Commons licence (attribution-share alike 3.0 unported).
