As part of its peace policy, Switzerland provided Mozambique with humanitarian and development aid to help it deal with the consequences of the 1976–92 civil war. Since then, Mozambique has faced a smouldering conflict between FRELIMO, the sole governing party since independence, and RENAMO, the main opposition party, which has participated in the country's political life despite its refusal to put down its arms. Since the beginning of 2017, Switzerland has chaired a contact group of seven members which is helping the two parties to the conflict to reach a lasting peace agreement.

X was enrolled at the age of 12, abandoning his studies in his second year of junior high. He says: when I was in the military movement, I provided security to my commander along with other children. Wherever he went, I was with him and he thought highly of me because I did my job well. I did everything he asked without being afraid that I might lose my life. I never asked him for anything (not even for money) but to only be by his side and to lead the war. When the latter ended, my commander chanted for victory and he was then integrated into the governmental armed forces. But, as for me, they told me to go home because children were not part of the military service, something that really shocked me because in the movement, on the front, no one ever told me that. All they said was that children did not die during war; even the best gunmen could not aim at them!

Muslims have never resorted to armed rebellion to assert their political position, although some have worked with the security forces, and a few were members of early Tamil militant groups. Fears of an armed movement emerging among Muslims, perhaps with a facade of Islamist ideology, have been present since the early 1990s, but most have remained committed to channelling their frustrations through the political process and negotiating with the government and Tamil militants at different times.
