For the history of filmic counter-information, there are three moments that clearly come to the forefront here: first, being precisely prepared for the (predictable) actions of the police force and the principle of collectivity (in other words the multiplication of standpoints) while filming enables the subversion of existing power relations. Secondly, there is the problem that most pictures can also be reinterpreted by the political opponent at any time. How can one film in such a way that political opponents cannot turn the pictures the way agents are turned? Thirdly, in its whole arrangement the film conveys that the director and his cameramen are united with the communist movement and the party, that they do not depict it from the outside, but rather represent it directly.

This is why we think it is so important to study the unfolding of struggles in detail. It is only in those struggles that the revolutionary horizon of the present is delineated. In the course of their struggles, proletarians periodically improvise solutions to the composition problem. They name a fictive unity, beyond the terms of capitalist society (most recently: the black bloc, real democracy, 99%, the movement for black lives, etc.), as a means of fighting against that society. While each of these improvised unities inevitably breaks down, their cumulative failures map out the separations that would have to be overcome by a communist movement in the chaotic uproar of a revolution against capital.

The Shining Path is a peculiarly inappropriate name for a movement which has killed and injured thousands of its countrymen. But its lethality pales in comparison with the mass terror of the brutal Cambodian communist movement, the Khmer Rouge. Although it has suffered many major setbacks since the start of the UN peacekeeping operations in Cambodia, it is still fighting the Cambodian government forces in the northwest of the country, and is still able to use the border with Thailand and covert collaboration and smuggling activities with corrupt Thai generals.

One of the characteristics of the period we go through as Marxist Leninist militants is the extreme weakening of the ties of historical continuity that bind us to the Marxist Leninist movement of the epoch opened by the First International built under the leadership of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Their work has been pursued by the CP(b)SU under Vladimir I. Lenin and Joseph Stalin as well as the PLA under Enver Hoxha. However, at present, there is no more organizational basis for the continuation of the labor of edification of the Communist Marxist-Leninist movement, in the strict sense of the word “continue”, that is, by consolidating, deepening and broadening existing organizational structures. For sure, organizations declaring themselves “Marxist Leninist party” subsist. In fact these are at most groups, circles, associations. Anyhow, as far as the activity of authentic Marxist Leninist militants is concerned, it has become progressively - yet not smoothly - ever more reduced and eventually bounded to the field of individual efforts, reaching at the very best extremely limited groupings between a few persons, extended by endeavors of hypothetical co-ordinations on international level.

1938 was a key year in Bosshard’s photojournalistic career. Like other western correspondents, he resided in Hankou, the temporary Chinese capital, which for months was subjected to the most severe Japanese bombing. Hankou was without doubt the media hotspot of that time. Every night, the correspondents would climb onto the roof of the Lutheran mission, in order to follow the spectacular air battles between the Japanese and Chinese aircraft or to discuss China’s chances in their desperate resistance against the advancing enemy. One of the observers was the already-famous photographer Robert Capa, who had come to China with a film team of the well-known documentary film-maker Joris Ivens. He had accepted the job as second cameraman for Ivens’ film The Four Hundred Million , because he hoped to also be able to assume the role of a reporter and photograph his own stories. He was especially interested in the communists’ resistance struggle against the nationalist Kuomintang government. In this movement he saw a far eastern extension of the antifascist movement, which he had already followed at close quarters in the Spanish civil war. However, the nationalists monitored the film team so closely that it was virtually impossible for Capa to move freely. Nonetheless, he still succeeded in producing some shocking reports – about the constant air strikes, the fear of the civilian population, the Chinese refugee flows and the daily struggle for survival. It was in Hankou that Robert Capa developed a friendly relationship and playful rivalry with Walter Bosshard. Both had the ambition of seeing their stories published in the renowned American magazine Life.
