Time is needed for the training and education required to become a trade union leader (including self-education). Combining family life, work and trade union activities is really difficult. Women are willing to get involved in trade union activities during working hours but, beyond that, many of them have no other choice but to go home to look after their children.

It is important to maintain a balance between employers and unions. It is also important to remember that while the current act, which was amended in 1999, provides for the use of substitute workers during a legal strike or lockout, an employer is never allowed to use the services of such workers with the intent of undermining the union. If union members or other employees feel that their rights have been violated, they have protection and can file a complaint with the Canada Industrial Relations Board.

This incident is part of a wider crackdown against human rights defenders, independent civil society, labor union movement and journalists, perpetuated by the Egyptian government that risks to bring to a complete eradication of the human rights community in Egypt. While civil society, human rights defenders, journalists and independent unions are the cornerstone of a pluralist and democratic society, and essential to the realisation of national reform processes, the Egyptian government is heavily shutting down civic space and systematically violating the rule of law on security and counter-terrorism grounds. Other Mauritius textile factories are preparing to delocalise entailing massive sacking of workers. The jobs of 100,000 Mauritian workers in the Free Zone is threatened. For some time, Mauritian employers wanted to delocalise their operations to countries where labour is cheaper. They have now been provided with an excellent pretext to do so. Unfortunately, it is expected that this delocalisation will have a negative impact on the peoples of the region.
