I: What is easy and what everyone can recognise in the story is the idea of a new generation taking over from an older generation. That older generation, the living story archive, thought that with their death, the wall would disappear. And then young recruits arrive, who know everything about the wall and decide to pursue their work. But the elders believe the wall should not become a monument. They believe the wall belongs to no one. They have always considered themselves those who would make sure that the wall would not belong to anyone. And so, of course, a generational conflict emerges.

The Wailing Wall is not the vestige of a bygone time, nor is it a memorial that preserves us from possible future Shoah’s, though it is that too. These rocks, blanched by years that appease a tormented earth, the mineral predestination of the history of Israel; the notes slipped into the cracks, confiding to the rock, sorrows turned into hope through the written word; the women who walk away backward as if their bodies could not “be of it” - of hope, salvation, eternity… This wall and its rites trace an invisible scar of heaven (nothing like the dragon of the Great Wall of China), which situates each of the globe’s inhabitants between wound and rebirth, collapse and survival: an anthropological truth which confers to those who revere or share it, a persistent dynamic energy.

Online social network activists launched a campaign ahead of what is referred to as “Electronic Anti-Negotiations Day”. They call on Palestinians opposed to the resumption of the peace talks to make their voice heard on September 13, 2013. According to the organizers, such “popular activity” reflects the desires of broad swathes of Palestinian public (Paltoday, September 4, 2013).

Kłopotowskiego revealed in 2006, this monument presents a neighbourhood band from the days when such musicians roamed the courtyards of Warsaw, especially in the Praga neighborhood, and played popular Warsaw tunes. In the band are a violinist, accordion player, guitarist, banjo player, and a drummer. A small square with benches surrounds the monument, where one can rest and listen to music, including tunes from the pre-war.

It seems your linkage with the past is transmitted the moment you are conceived. A bond that never really allows you to disregard Mosaic Law. Of all the hanukkiot I have made, my favourite is the first, dated 1996. It is a bronze casting, but it is not the material that is important. It is my favourite because of what it signifies. The branches represent the folded notes that are placed in the cracks in the Western Wall in Jerusalem. As I said before, my fascination with the world and culture of Judaism gained me an insight into its tradition. This is my way of keeping the tradition alive.

The Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre , Edwin Cardinal O' Brien, shares the deep concern expressed by the Holy Father and countless other religious and civic leaders for the possible consequences of any unilateral decision that might alter the equilibrium of the Holy City. He reiterates the necessity that all initiatives within the Land that contains the places of worship of the three major monotheistic religions, the Holy Sepulchre, the Wailing Wall and the Mosque of Omar be the result of a peaceful dialogue among all the interested parties.

Already, in this new role, I have had the opportunity to meet and build friendships with many people from within the Jewish communities of the United Kingdom and more widely. It was moving, earlier in the summer on a visit to Jerusalem with some of my family, to renew friendships there and meet others for the first time, as well as to recite psalms at the Western Wall and visit Yad Vashem. Having become a President of the Council of Christians and Jews, I am also grateful for the structure and opportunities that CCJ provides through which many in both of our communities can get to know one another better.

Ben-Gurion visited the Western Wall the day after its capture, accompanied by his protégé, Shimon Peres. He noticed a tile sign in front of the Wall, which read “Al-Buraq Rd” in English and Arabic but not in Hebrew. (According to the Qur’an, al-Buraq was Muhammad’s mystical winged horse on which he made his famous night journey to Jerusalem. On arrival, the horse was tethered in the southwest corner of the Haram, or temple enclosure, while the Prophet ascended to heaven.) Ben-Gurion looked at the sign with disapproval and asked if anyone had a hammer. A soldier tried to pry off the tile with a bayonet, but Ben-Gurion was concerned about damage to the stone. An axe was produced and the name on the tile carefully removed. The symbolism of expunging Arabic from the redeemed Jewish holy site was not lost on the surrounding crowd, nor on Ben-Gurion. They cheered, and he exclaimed, “This is the greatest moment of my life since I came to Israel.” It’s a curious remark for a man who had seen many “great moments” in his long career, including direct involvement in the founding of the State of Israel.

East Jerusalem is peaceful and calm. The entrance to the old city, the Damascus Gate, seems almost deserted. Long ago it was very crowded and dozens of farmers would come here to sell their produce. Apparently this is no longer allowed. The old city continues to be one of the most beautiful urban districts in the world. We visit typical sites like the church with Christ’s tomb and we climb the tower of a small nearby church. From here you have a clear view of the city and where the Palestinians live and where the Jewish section has developed. In the distance is the wall again, splitting the landscape in two. We walk under Sharon’s house, which is situated in the middle of the Palestinian area. Nobody seems to really know how Sharon is faring these days. Rumour has it he is still in coma. We pass through a checkpoint and walk to the Wailing Wall where large groups of Jewish believers whisper their weekly complaints. I have never been so close to it. I find it impressive and emotional. We stroll down the narrow streets of the souks, eat the best hummus at Lina’s and have a coffee on the terrace of the Jerusalem Hotel, where I once stayed for a few days during my first visit (2001) to the occupied areas after fleeing from Ramallah (there were serious attacks on Jerusalem, and the Belgian Consul in Ramallah came and fetched us). It is always such a pleasure to be in Jerusalem. The city radiates so much charged energy. It feels like the very centre of the history of man and it is hard to believe that here a human, religious and political drama of such proportions is taking place that it has for centuries paralysed the world, or if you prefer, helped shape it.
