Retail prices for bananas in UK supermarkets have once again been subject to substantial price reductions to between £0.67 and £0.74 per kilo. These price cuts are driven by the strategies adopted by supermarkets to position themselves in the context of the economic downturn. Alistair Smith of Banana Link has voiced concerns over the practice of discounting banana prices adopted by major multiple retailers, a practice which he believes serves to ‘devalue bananas in consumers minds’, thereby bringing ‘volatility to the market’. There are also concerns over the longer-term impact of these practices on prices paid to banana growers. While ‘retailers guarantee minimum prices to suppliers of fair-trade bananas’, which as a consequence ‘remain protected from the effects of discounting, ... it is a different matter in the conventional banana supply chain.’ Here, while losses were not immediately being passed on to growers, prices are being put under greater pressure when supply contracts come up for renegotiation. This results in value being squeezed out of the supply chain. In addition, according to Alistair Smith, ‘ongoing price wars in the conventional banana sector are preventing any further growth in the fair-trade market’. Smith maintains that ‘some retailers would have made the conversion to 100% fair-trade bananas if the subsequent price differentials between conventional and fair-trade weren’t so great.’ He argues that retailers committed to fair trade should abandon such price wars and instead give the signal that ‘a low price is not a fair price.’
