In the stalactite caves in Baar, which have been owned by the Schmid family for generations, nature provides one of the purest sources of water in Switzerland. It takes a full ten years for one drop of rain to reach the ceiling of the cave and fall into the spring basin. This ancient spring water is used to refine the JOHNETT Swiss Single Malt Whisky.

As the victim of a construction accident in 1936 that cost him his right arm, Tillenius once thought he would have to abandon his passion for painting. But a determined nurse convinced him to try drawing with his left hand. His triumph over physical disability and his artistic accomplishments are highlighted in the documentary Tillenius: The Art of Nature, produced by Karvonen Films.

1. Engineering parkin to reduce Parkinson's effects: Dr. Kalle Gehring, Professor of Biochemistry, collaborated with Dr. Edward Fon of the Montreal Neurological Institute and Jean-François Trempe, Assistant Professor of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, to uncover the crystal structure of the PARK2 (parkin) gene, mutations of which play a role in hereditary Parkinson's disease, as well as other forms of the disease. The researchers then created new mutations to help parkin better recognize damaged mitochondria and thereby enhance its neuroprotective properties. This important discovery, published in Science in 2013, marked a significant step toward developing new therapies to treat Parkinson's.

Fisterra is nailed in one of the zones with more shipwrecks in the so called Costa da Morte (Death Coast), it is the tombs of numerous sailors. The most important catastrophe of Fisterra’s history took place on November 28, 1596, when there was the major maritime disaster of the Spanish history. A fleet of 25 Spanish warships, directed by Martin de Padilla, got lost in its waters and 1.706 sailors died. The disaster happened eight years later and in identical circumstances to the famous episode of the Invincible Navy, when the Spanish went to fight against England.

If a new property of a known material or article is found out, that is mere discovery and unpatentable because discovery as such has no technical effect and is therefore not an invention within the meaning of Art. 52(1). If, however, that property is put to practical use, then this constitutes an invention which may be patentable. For example, the discovery that a particular known material is able to withstand mechanical shock would not be patentable, but a railway sleeper made from that material could well be patentable. To find a previously unrecognised substance occurring in nature is also mere discovery and therefore unpatentable. However, if a substance found in nature can be shown to produce a technical effect, it may be patentable. An example of such a case is that of a substance occurring in nature which is found to have an antibiotic effect. In addition, if a microorganism is discovered to exist in nature and to produce an antibiotic, the microorganism itself may also be patentable as one aspect of the invention. Similarly, a gene which is discovered to exist in nature may be patentable if a technical effect is revealed, e.g. its use in making a certain polypeptide or in gene therapy.
