Cattle exclusion fencing is being studied adjacent to riparian areas in four watersheds. Economics results are similar in all four watersheds and indicate that, although there may be some on-farm benefits in terms of increased cattle productivity, these are unlikely to fully offset installation costs in the short term.

When children are exposed to less healthy choices at school, they do not compensate by choosing more healthy choices when away from school. Our schools need to help children learn how to make the best nutritional choices and form good eating habits now to carry them through their lives.

The policy states that previously filed GST/HST returns will not be adjusted to claim missed ITCs or other credit adjustments that do not offset a previously unreported tax liability for the same reporting period. As such, an additional refund will not be payable and the registrant should claim the missed ITCs or other credit adjustments in the next reporting period.

Where insurers have operations in both Canada and the US, required capital for Canadian and US operations is calculated on a combined basis. The combined required capital for Canadian and US operations is calculated using the stress scenario that produces the highest total loss in the two countries. Scenario losses are calculated assuming that gains in one country do not offset losses in the other. Consequently, if the required capital for either country is negative under a scenario, the required capital for that country is set to zero for the purpose of calculating the total capital requirement for that scenario.

“We are looking forward to getting back to the table with a focused package built around the most important remaining issues as identified by our members,” Wahab said, “These are job security, working conditions, wages and outsourcing.” Students currently face unpredictable hiring practices that leave them unsure of their jobs every semester, workload issues based on the number of classes taught during a semester, reductions in the number of guaranteed hours and wage increases that get eaten away by inflation and the rising cost of tuition.

1.3.17 The Audit Team is not convinced that the rationale used by the Mission in seeking approval to rent these two SQs is sound. The cost of fit-up does not offset the large differences in rent which the Mission is committed to for three years. The figures used to cost out fit-up on an average SQ included the purchase of a new generator, air conditioning equipment and appliances. The acquisition of the SQ was not as a result of the establishment of a new position, therefore some equipment would have been available to transfer from the previous SQ. Also, the cost of fit-up was amortized over five years when in fact the life of much of this equipment would be much longer than five years.

The buffalo were decreasing already by the winter of 1878-1879, just as Big Bear was at the height of his influence. He began trying to build a large First Nations alliance to demand better terms from the government. He met the new Indian Commissioner, Edgar Dewdney, at Fort Walsh in June of 1879. He spoke with Dewdney for several days about the problem of the vanishing buffalo, and the inadequacy of the treaties to make up for their loss. However, he was unable to bring any understanding or change to Dewdney's, and the government's, position. A destitute Little Pine, one of the holdout non-treaty chiefs, relented. He and other chiefs signed Treaty Four at Fort Walsh that July on behalf of 472 people, further weakening Big Bear's position. Little Pine's and Lucky Man's people were then allowed immediate provisions, but Big Bear still refused to sign.

While this book is disappointing from the British perspective, it offers several interesting insights: a population that had not been completely separated by the American War of Independence became more distinctive in the aftermath of the War of 1812; and the only quantifiable outcome of the conflict was the confirmation of the existing border between America and British North America. The author also provides interesting examples of contrasts between Upper Canada and the American republic before the war, such as the lower tax burden carried by Upper Canadians as compared to that borne by the Americans. Taylor’s descriptions of the interactions between soldiers and civilians are vivid, and in contrast to other works. For example, the operations of the two fine American divisions in the Niagara Peninsula during the summer and fall of 1814, while valiant, did little towards securing American victory, and they actually “… wasted the nation’s finest troops in futile battles.” Tactical successes cannot make up for strategic failure, and this appears to be the author’s lesson of the war, that, superficially at least, the post-war American idea of victory was a crafted mirage.
