Murchison Falls is an impressive yet enchanting waterfall located in the largest game reserve of Uganda. The White Nile flows right through the park and brings with it an abundance of wildlife. The majestic waterfalls can be seen up close during a boat trip safari. Ornithologists are often spotted in this region trying to record exceptional bird song. The nearby Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is definitely worth your time.

The orange and tan colors of this high-oblique photograph of the Horn of Africa indicate an arid-to-semiarid landscape in the northern half of the east African country of Somalia. Except in the darker areas where thicker vegetation can be found, most of the vegetation in this part of Somalia is shrub brush and grasslands. The general climate of this region features hot temperatures and scarce, irregular rainfall. Two distinct drainage basins are characterized by lighter colors-the Nugaaleed Valley along the western side of the photograph and the other watershed trending toward the Hafun Peninsula, the tombolo along the east coast of Somalia. Flying up the White Nile, all I saw was tremendous economic opportunity for the people of Sudan. I certainly share your views of the Dinka and Nuer who are there and their extraordinarily resiliency. When I was down there, I thought, these people will do just fine if they're free of conflict and are able to have a bit of opportunity to fend for themselves.

She deplores the senseless killing of innocent civilians and the humanitarian tragedy unfolding on the ground. In reality, water-related tensions are aggravated when a State acts unilaterally, or changes the way it uses water. A peremptory decision taken to the detriment of other countries in the same water basin or aquifer further exacerbates political tensions, to the point that the water dimension is temporarily overshadowed. The issue of water resources, which are genuine instruments of power in the context of conflicts - diversions of rivers, closures of dam gates - add to the antagonisms that seriously compromise possible negotiations, and contribute to the possible outbreak of conflict in the region. The Turkish project to build 22 dams on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers (GAP project) in 1989, or the current project to build the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the Blue Nile, which alone accounts for almost 60% of the flow of the Nile, are perfect examples of this. These unilateral actions prompt the other countries of the basin to build new dams, to compensate for the shortage of electricity and especially the lack of water.

The potential serial nomination has been proposed through Sudan’s tentative list. The Spanish Funds-in-trust have contributed funding in the form of Preparatory Assistance for the realization of a Management Plan and nomination dossier for the inscription of the site on the World Heritage List. The Sudanese ‘National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums’ (NCAM) is piloting the project in collaboration with an expert of the British Museum, a team of experts of Tyne and Wear Museums Archaeology Department and the UNESCO World Heritage Centre.

Beginning in 1925, Bernatzik travelled to Egypt, photographing the people, the domestic and religious architecture, the antiquities and, in the southern region, the outstanding natural landscapes and wildlife. He returned to Egypt in 1927, journeying through to the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. He originally planned to photograph wildlife around Lake Rudolf, but found that the area was closed to outsiders by the English authorities. He instead chose, fortuitously, to travel down the White Nile, almost to its source at the Belgian Congo. On this journey he encountered people never before photographed, including the Dinka, the Nuer, the Shilluk and the Eastern Jur. He sojourned from the mountain fastnesses of the Nuba to the malarial swamps of Malakal, all the while photographing the inhabitants and their world. His remarkable series of photographs of these Nubian people predate by a generation the work of George Rodgers and later that of Leni Riefenstahl.
